Chianni is a municipality with 1330 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pisa in the Tuscany region in Italy .

Location of Chianni in the province of Pisa

The community extends over approx. 60  km² . It is located approx. 60 km southwest of the regional capital Florence and 35 km southeast of the provincial capital Pisa . Some districts are on the Sterza River (9 of 19 km in the municipality), and Cascina rises in the eastern municipality . Chianni is in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone D, 1 955 GR / G. The place is part of the Diocese of Volterra and thus belongs to the Archdiocese of Pisa as a suffragan diocese .

The districts include Garetto, I Gulfi, La Fornace, La Pescaia, La Pieve, Rivalto and Sassi Bianchi. The district of Rivalto, about 1 km to the north, with its approx. 100 inhabitants, is the largest district.

The neighboring municipalities are Casciana Terme Lari , Castellina Marittima , Lajatico , Riparbella , Santa Luce and Terricciola .

history

Henry VI. subordinated the place to the Bishop of Volterra in 1186 . Seven years later, the place went to the Republic of Pisa. In 1288 the place again submitted to the bishop of Volterra, Lapo di Rosso de 'Rossi , but in the same year the place was recaptured from Pisa under the command of Guido da Montefeltro . In 1325 the place revolted against Pisa and was shortly thereafter slammed back to Volterra by Charles IV . On March 6, 1406 the place was taken by the Republic of Florence together with its neighbor and today's district Rivalto.

  • Chiesa di San Donato , church in the main town, which was completely restored in 1812. The exact year of origin of the church is unknown, around the 15th century. Contains the work Sant'Antonio in adorazione di Gesù Bambino ascribed to Ventura Salimbeni .
  • Cappella della Compagnia della Santissima Annunziata , chapel in the center of the village, adjacent to the Church of San Donato. Probably built around the time that San Donato was being rebuilt (18th century).
  • Santuario della Madonna del Carmine , sanctuary just below the village. Probably comes from the 13th century and was given its current name in the 17th century. The loggia , which was added to the building as a church extension in 1929 , also dates from this period .
  • Santuario della Madonna del Carmine , an 18th century sanctuary just outside the Rivalto district, contains the work Madonna del Carmine by Carlo Dolci .
  • Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano , church in the center of Rivalto. Contains the works Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano and Madonna addolorata (17th century).
  • Santa Croce (Oratorio della Compagnia della Santa Croce), church in the center of Rivalto. Contains the 17th century painting Maria addolorata e San Giovanni .
