Due to its strategically important location on the border between Pisa and Lucca, Vecchiano was soon taken by Pisa, which also built the castle church Chiesa di Santa Maria in Castello . From the 13th to the 15th century, the community and its districts were the scene of acts of war between Pisa and Lucca and was also attacked by the Duchy of Milan . With the defeat of Pisa in 1406 Vecchiano came under Florentine rule. Under this the place came into the Duchy of Tuscany and under the rule of the Habsburg-Lorraine , who were able to maintain rule in the area even under the occupation of Napoleon . The place became an independent municipality in 1810 when it separated from San Giuliano .
