Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina is an Italian municipality with 2166 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pisa in the Tuscany region .

Location of the municipality in the province of Pisa

The municipality is about 90 km southwest of the regional capital Florence and 90 km southeast of the provincial capital Pisa . It is part of the Comunità montana Alta Val di Cecina and is not far from the valley of the devil in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone E, 2 144 GR / G.

The municipality is divided into two geographically independent areas, separated by the municipalities of Pomarance and Radicondoli ( SI ). The district of Montecastelli Pisano is separated from the main town in the northeast. The border with Volterra is only 45 meters away, separated by the municipality of Casole d'Elsa (SI).

The rivers Cecina (3 km of a total of 78 km) and Cornia (8 km of 49 km) as well as the Torrenti Pavone (9 km of 32 km) and Possera (4 km of 18 km) flow through the municipality .

The districts (Frazioni) include Lagoni del Sasso (449  m , approx. 120 inhabitants), Leccia (370 m, approx. 20 inhabitants), Montecastelli Pisano (494 m, approx. 110 inhabitants) and Sasso Pisano (210 m, approx 500 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Casole d'Elsa, Monterotondo Marittimo ( GR ), Montieri (GR), Pomarance and Radicondoli (SI).

history

The place is mentioned for the first time in documents in 1176, here the Cassero (castle) and the church are reported. In 1213, Volterra took control of the place. The current municipal boundaries came into being in 1870, when the districts of Leccia and Sasso Pisano were separated from the municipality of Pomarance and Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina was assigned. From the 20th century, geothermal energy and geothermal power plants became an important industry.
