Radicondoli is a place with 914 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

Location of Radicondoli in the province of Siena

The place extends over 132  km² . It is located about 25 km southwest of the provincial capital Siena and 60 km southwest of the regional capital Florence . The place is in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone E, 2 261 GG. The main bodies of water in the municipality are the Cecina (13 km in the municipality), the Feccia (9 km in the municipality) and the Torrente Pavone (4 of 32 km in the municipality). The place belongs to the diocese of Volterra .

The districts include Anqua (477 m, approx. 6 inhabitants, located approx. 8 km southwest) and Belforte (542 m, approx. 225 inhabitants, located approx. 5 km southeast).

The neighboring municipalities are Casole d'Elsa , Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina ( PI ), Chiusdino , Montieri ( GR ) and Pomarance (PI).

history

The place was first mentioned as a castle in documents of the Bichi Borghesi family in 1209. The Aldobrandeschi ruled here, but were subjugated by Siena in November 1221. The Aldobrandeschi continued to run the place as a fief for a few years . After various disputes, the place was taken in 1268 by Provenzano Salvani for Siena. The Podestà was initially provided by the Malavolti family from Senese. In the conflict between Siena and Florence, the place surrendered on November 27, 1554 and fell into the hands of the Medici .

  • Collegiata dei Santi Simone e Giuda , church from the 16th century in the town center. Contains the canvas paintings Transito di Maria Vergine (1569) and Natività di Gesù (1590) by Alessandro Casolani as well as a Madonna con San Giovanni Battista by Astolfo Petrazzi .
  • Monastero di Santa Caterina della Rota , monastery of the Augustinian order documented in 1345 in the town center. Contains the work Battesimo di Cristo by Astolfo Petrazzi.
  • Chiesa del Crocifisso , church at the entrance to the village (Piazza Gramsci), probably 16th century.
  • Porta Olla , still existing city gate of the fortification walls.
  • Teatro dei Risorti , municipal theater with 67 seats. Located in the center of the village on Via Garibaldi.
  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista , also known as Pieve vecchia , Pieve which was first mentioned in the 12th century and which is just outside the city walls near the cemetery.
  • San Francesco dell'Osservanza , 15th century monastery just outside the town center, which is no longer active today.
  • San Rufo , church from the 16th century in the district of Anqua.
  • Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in the Belforte district, Pieve documented as early as 1328.
  • Chiesa della Compagnia di Santa Croce , church in Belforte (17th century).
  • Palazzo Pubblico , building in Belforte.
  • Natività di Maria Santissima, church in the Località Cornocchia (Fattoria di Cornocchia), 17th century.
  • Castello Elci , today's castle ruins between Anqua and Belforte from the 10th century. Belonged to the Pannocchieschi d'Elci and served as the headquarters of the Senese branch of the family. The pieve in town was named after San Niccolò.
  • Santa Croce , church of the Castello di Falsini castle.
  • Cappella di San Rocco , chapel of the Castello di Fosini.
  • San Nicola , church in Marcigliana (Podere Marcigliana).
