history

In 743 the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata was founded. The name of the place is derived from this event. The castle was first mentioned in 1145 and the place had its own statutes as early as 1212. First the Aldobrandeschi ruled the place, then the Orsini family. In 1265 Siena occupied the place, but only four years later Orvieto recaptured the place. This was reoccupied by the Aldobrandeschi in 1316, but was recaptured by Ventura Guasta. In 1347 Siena took over and in 1480 granted the citizens of Siena civil rights. The place stayed near Siena until 1559 and then became part of the Medici Grand Duchy of Tuscany . In 1782 the place was conquered by the Papal States and remained there until the Risorgimento .

From the second half of the 19th century, industrial mercury mining was carried out on Monte Amiata by mining cinnabar , from which mercury is extracted. The deposit on Monte Amiata was, along with the deposits in Idrija in Slovenia and Almadén in Spain, the world's largest mine of its kind. At the end of the 1970s, the mine closed due to falling world market prices, which made production unprofitable. The spacious and partially dilapidated mine area is located on the outskirts in the direction of Monte Amiata and now houses a museum on the history of local mercury mining.
