history

In today's area of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the district of Montaperti, the Battle of Montaperti took place on September 4, 1260 , in which the Ghibellines and Guelphs faced each other in the form of Florence and Siena. Shortly before the gates of Siena, Florence suffered a crushing defeat. Castelnuovo itself was only founded by the Republic of Siena with a decree of July 26, 1366 and, like Monteriggioni, served as a guardian of the Senese borders, in this case the border with Arezzo and Florence. The city walls and castle were built between 1373 and 1374 under the Senese Mino Dei. After several attempts by the Fiorentines (1478 and 1479) to take the castle, Siena was forced to equip the city with a new wall ring towards the end of the 15th century , of which a single tower still exists today. As a result of the renewed clashes between Florence and Siena, Castelnuovo was captured by Florence in 1554 and suffered the same fate as Siena. It was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under Cosimo I de 'Medici .
