Ponte a Bozzone is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is about 10 km west of the main town Castelnuovo Berardenga and about 4 km northeast of the city of Siena at 235  m slm. In 2001 it had about 630 inhabitants. In 2011 there were 851. The place is a few meters north of the Bozzone river , which is the municipal boundary to Siena ( Monteliscai ).

Description and history

The place arose in the valley between the higher-lying villas of Monciano and Geggiano and the Charterhouse of San Pietro a Pontignano on the bridge over the Bozzone. Before 1919 the place consisted of 3 buildings. The current townscape emerged from the 1970s when many new houses were built. Today the place is the second largest district of Castelnuovo Berardenga after Quercegrossa .

  • Santi Pietro e Paolo , church built from 1998 to 2007 in the town center. Since March 23, 2011 the church is the official successor of the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo of Monteliscai, which lost its functions. The church organ was installed in 2011–2012 by Paolo Ciabatti and comes from the St. Kastor Church in Miesenheim . It was built here in 1963 by Josef Klein from Obersteinebach using materials from an organ from 1922. The organ was inaugurated in December 2012.
  • Ponte sul Bozzone , bridge over the Bozzone river, documented in the 16th century, but probably from the 13th / 14th. Century. The bridge was restored at the beginning of the 19th century, the work was carried out in 1821 under the direction of Agostino Fantastici . The bridge suffered severe damage during World War II and was rebuilt afterwards.
  • Certosa di San Pietro , Charterhouse in the Località Pontignano (324 m), approx. 2.5 km north of the village on the road to Vagliagli , which is dedicated to San Pietro . In 1341 the land was bought by Bindo di Falcone, the permission to build a charterhouse dates from 1343. The fortification walls date from 1385 and were built by the Republic of Siena. The buildings contain frescoes created under the direction of Bernardino Poccetti , including the paintings Passione , San Giovanni Battista , San Brunone and Storie della Vergine (all inside the church), Morte di San Brunone and Storie della Passione (Chiostro grande / great cloister ) and Ultima cena ( refectory ). Further works were created by the Nasini . In the course of the Pazzi conspiracy , the Charterhouse was set on fire in 1478. After the reconstruction, Pontignano was captured by various troops in the conflict between Siena and Florence in 1554. From 1785 until the disbandment by Napoleonic troops at the beginning of the 19th century, San Pietro belonged to the Camaldolese . The Charterhouse of Pontignano has been owned by the University of Siena since 1959 .
  • Villa di Geggiano , approx. 1.5 km northeast of Ponte a Bozzone located villa of the Località Geggiano (326 m). It had consisted of smaller houses since the 1530s and these were converted into a villa in 1768 for the wedding of Anton Domenico Bianchi Bandinelli with Cecilia Chigi. In 1799, the English painter Ignazio Moder worked on the frescoes of the corridors on the ground floor, which were often based on Giuseppe Zocchi . The Madonna del Rosario chapel was built between 1768 and 1799.
  • Villa di Monaciano , about 1.5 km north-west located villa in Località Monaciano, which was built in the 17th century and was documented as the property of Acrizia Chigi in 1692. At that time the area was administratively part of Monteliascai. Between 1870 and 1885 the villa was significantly changed by Alessandro Pucci Sansedoni. The villa has an English landscape garden (Giardino all'inglese).

  • Ponte a Bozzone is on the provincial road Via Chiantigiana SP 408 , which leads from Siena to Gaiole in Chianti and on to Montevarchi . The closest long-distance connection is the Siena Nord junction on Raccordo autostradale 3 . This is approx. 5 km to the west, but has to be approached via Siena (approx. 9 km total distance).
  • The nearest rail stop is in Siena, approx. 5 km away. It is on the Siena- Empoli - Chiusi / Grosseto railway line .
