history
On one of these hills, where a Capuchin monastery was located until 2002 , the Montevarchi Castle rose before the turn of the first millennium . The town of the same name developed in the 12th century from the market square, where the residents of the inaccessible fort met merchants. The castle belonged to the Guidi until 1273, when it finally came to Florence. In the border location between the territories of Arezzo and Florence , Montevarchi was attacked and devastated several times, especially in 1287 when Guelphs who had fled Arezzo were attacked there by their Ghibelline compatriots. In 1338 Montevarchi was surrounded by a city wall and received administrative autonomy. Politically it suffered the vicissitudes of the Tuscan state that formed around Florence. During this time it remained a thriving agricultural market, as it was once founded, but also became a handicraft center specializing in the production of silk and wool . Later it was added to the developing province of Arezzo as part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . After the Italian unification, it experienced an enormous industrial boom together with the surrounding communities through the use of the area's brown coal deposits . Montevarchi devoted himself to the production of felt , especially hats. Although production-related energy supply is no longer such a great locational advantage and headgear is no longer as widespread as it was in the 1930s, the manufacture of fashion products is still one of the city's main livelihoods.
