Giovanni Martinelli (* 10. November 1600 or 11. April 1604 in Montevarchi , † 1659 in Florence ) was an Italian painter of the Baroque .

Live and act

The date of birth of Giovanni Martinelli has not yet been clearly established, as the baptismal register in question in Montevarchi lists two different people, both of whom could be used for identification with the painter: April 1604. Research seems more likely that the first of these two dates concerns the artist Martinelli, since he was clearly mentioned in a document from the Accademia del Disegno in Florence as early as 1621 , the content of which suggests not a boy, but a person of a slightly more adult age. In 1623 it can be traced again, this time in the workshop of Jacopo Ligozzi . The last written sign of life is from 1659; this is almost unreservedly interpreted as the year of the painter's death, although there is no clear evidence of this.

Martinelli had made a name for himself as an independent artist in the 1630s at the latest and carried out numerous private and church commissions in Florence in the years that followed. Longer stays outside of Tuscany - for example in the center of Rome , which is important for the study of antiquities for artists - are not documented. His style can be described as a symbiosis of the typical painting style of early Baroque Florentine painters (such as Cesare Dandini , Vincenzo Dandini or Francesco Furini ) and elements of the Roman-Lombard Caravaggists . In addition to the sacred paintings, a significant part of his oeuvre depicts personifications of arts, virtues or vices or - in this again not unlike Caravaggio - depicts genre constellations of smaller groups of figures that allow the viewer to interpret allegories. In addition, he has emerged several times through still lifes .
