It is the westernmost municipality in the province of Arezzo and is located in the upper Arno Valley (Valdarno Superiore) a few kilometers northeast of the Chianti in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone E, 2 106 GG. The churches of the parish are in the diocese of Fiesole .

The districts include Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni (280 m, approx. 1000 inhabitants), Massa dei Sabbioni (351 m, approx. 150 inhabitants), Meleto Valdarno (240 m, approx. 450 inhabitants), Montegonzi (439 m, approx. 140 Inhabitants), Neri (294 m, approx. 520 inhabitants), San Cipriano Valdarno-Santa Barbara (143 m, approx. 1800 inhabitants) and Vacchereccia (150 m, approx. 730 inhabitants).

history

The community was founded on March 17, 1809 under Napoleonic rule . Before that, most of the districts were independent and mostly of Etruscan origin. Most of the place names are derived from the time of the Etruscans and the Romans: Caprilius for Cavriglia or Avane for the entire region of the upper Arno valley, e.g. B. Castelnuovo d'Avane (today Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni) and San Cipriano in Avane (today San Cipriano Valdarno). In the Middle Ages (12th and 13th centuries) the area was ruled by the count families Conti and Ricasoli , later by the Ubertini and the Pazzi (14th century). After the introduction of the so-called leagues (Italian Leghe ) by the Republic of Florence, most of the towns joined the Lega d'Avane , the capital of which is now the district of Montegonzi. With the reforms of Grand Duke Leopold I , the Lega d'Avane was annexed to the neighboring community of San Giovanni Valdarno in 1773 , where it remained until Cavriglia was founded in 1809.

On July 4, 1944 (and partly on the following days), a retaliatory action by the Parachute Panzer Division 1 Hermann Göring of the Wehrmacht took place, in which 173 male residents lost their lives. The Cavriglia massacre took place mainly in the districts of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni and Meleto.
