Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni (also Castelnuovo d'Avane or Castelnuovo di Cavriglia ) is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Cavriglia in the province of Arezzo in Tuscany .

geography

The place is about 3.5 km northwest of the capital Cavriglia, about 35 km west of the provincial capital Arezzo and about 30 km southeast of the regional capital Florence in the upper Arno valley . The place is at 280  m slm and had 1083 inhabitants in 2001. In 2011 there were 1242 inhabitants. The place consists of the medieval, almost abandoned part (Borgo vecchio) and the new place just south of the former castle.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1120 as a Castrum Novum in a document from the Badia a Coltibuono monastery . In the Battle of Montaperti in 1260, the place fought on the side of Florence. Despite the lost battle, the place remained under the control of Florence, on October 5, 1294 Giano della Bella regained its full rights from Florence and became part of the Lega d'Avane. On July 4, 1944, the were massacres of Cavriglia by Parachute Panzer Division 1 Hermann Goering in Del Lago 73 people killed. From 1956 the Borgo vecchio was gradually depopulated to give way to the lignite mining of the Enel . In 2002 the municipality of Cavriglia bought the Borgo vecchio from the Enel, in 2012 the mining museum was opened there on the left side of the church.
