Badia a Coltibuono

history

Vallombrosa monks of a Benedictine order began to build the monastery in 1051, the name of which translates as "Abbey of the good harvest". It is one of the oldest monasteries in Tuscany. However, the Etruscans probably settled here 2000 years ago. The monks planted vineyards and olive groves. In 1107 Benedikt Ricasoli died here , his relics are still on the main altar today. In the 15th century, under the protection of Lorenzo de 'Medici , the monastery flourished. After Tuscany came under Napoleon's rule in 1810, the monks had to leave the monastery because it was secularized. In 1811 it was first sold in a lottery - until it was acquired by the family of the current owners in 1846.

winery

Today the former monastery is a renowned winery run by the Stucchi Prinetti family. The widow of the late Piero Stucchi Prinetti is Lorenza de ' Medici , who is a well-known cookbook author. The winery is known for its Chianti classici and Riserva wines, but there is also a whole range of white wines on offer.
