Benedikt Ricasoli OSBVall (* 11th century in Gaiole in Chianti ; † January 20, 1107 in Badia a Coltibuono ) was an Italian monk and hermit . He is venerated as a blessed in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Benedikt Ricasoli came from a wealthy, noble family who are said to have been related to the Medici . His parents had founded the monastery of San Lorenzo in Coltibuono , which had joined the Vallombrosan people . The young Benedict was entrusted to this monastery for spiritual education.

After becoming a monk, with the permission of his abbot Azzo, he moved as a hermit on a mountain not far from the monastery. He only came to the monastery on Sundays and public holidays to celebrate Holy Mass there with his brothers . The rest of the time he spent fasting, vigil, and prayer. On January 20, 1107, Benedikt Ricasoli died in his hermitage.

In 1430 his undecayed body was found and he was buried in the monastery church of Coltibuono, where his relics rest under the main altar. The veneration of the Blessed, which began soon afterwards among the Vallombrosans, was only confirmed by the Pope at the beginning of the 20th century .

His feast day is January 20th.
