The task was solved in such a way that the eye clinic with all rooms including three rooms for inpatients to be treated on the ground floor and the private apartment for the ophthalmologist's family on the upper floor. Both floors are connected by a staircase, but have separate entrances from the outside. The caretaker's apartment and other utility rooms are located in the basement, staff and guest rooms on the top floor. The building has served its purpose for eight decades without any significant changes and is a listed building. In 2009 it was redesigned into an assisted living house. As a result of this conversion, the interior structure has been changed, unfortunately wall coverings and built-in furniture designed by the architect were lost. "
The building, built in 1910, dates back to the first years of independent activity by the architect Adalbert Erlebach, who worked for the Dresden architect Woldemar Kandler until 1904. From 1910 until the Second World War he lived and worked exclusively in South Tyrol, and during these decades he had a decisive influence on the face of the city of Merano. Royal Saxon Milestones (aggregate): Milestone | Dresdner Strasse (map) |
after 1858 (half milestone) | Milestone; Half milestone, of importance for the history of traffic
The royal Saxon milestones were the successors of the Saxon postal milestones. On September 1, 1858, the road construction engineer Wilke began to re-measure the Saxon roads. This re-measurement formed the basis for the introduction of the new measurement system. This comprised station stones, milestones, half-milestones, branch stones and border crossing stones. The station stones were set up at the beginning and end of mail routes. The names and the distance of the towns along the route were marked on them. The milestones were right on the road. On one side of the stone was the name and distance of the starting point and on the other side the name and distance of the place at the end of the mail route. The half-milestones should mark the route. A crown was attached on either side. labeling was not common. Junction stones stood at junctions from the main route and usually only bore the name of the next post office without any indication of the distance. The name “Kingdom of Saxony” was marked on the border crossing stones. On the other hand, these contained place names and distances. The distance between station stones and whole milestones was 1 mile (this corresponds to 7.5 km). Accordingly, the distance between the station stone and half mile stone and between half mile stone and whole mile stone was ½ mile = 3.75 km. Since 1875, the meter has been the official measure of length throughout the German Empire (including the Kingdom of Saxony). For this reason, the stones have been changed many times to the new size. All stones were made from sandstone. |

Mid-18th century | Historically important building in a prominent urban corner, hipped roof with pike, representative entrance situation with curved gable and heraldic cartouche, birthplace of the painter Erich Heckel, house with ancillary building in closed development and in a corner. Two-storey plastered building on a rectangular floor plan with a representative house entrance with a curved gable and heraldic cartouche, regularly arranged rectangular windows with folding shutters (probably later), closed off by a crooked hip roof with a large pike. The expressionist painter Erich Heckel was born in the house on July 31, 1883 . This fact explains the great importance of the house in terms of personal history and local history. The building continues to be of architectural significance as an authentically preserved example of civil construction around 1800. Two-storey. |

Landhaus am Berge (villa and enclosure) | Otto-Johnsen-Strasse 4 (map) |
1909 | It is of architectural and artistic importance, the design of the villa was evidently inspired by the reform style and buildings by Muthesius, the villa built in 1909 for the metal goods manufacturer Max Knobloch according to plans by the architect Adalbert Erlebach. Two-storey plastered building on a natural stone base with a window bay and a polygonal bay window on one of the gable sides, above a spacious balcony. The leaded glass windows in the stairwell are remarkable. The gable sides were partially slated, and the gable roof, which was animated by two dormers, was covered with beaver tails with a double covering. Architectural concepts of the reform style and buildings by the architect Muthesius probably influenced the architect Erlebach. The building was created during the first years of independent activity by the architect Erlebach, who worked for the Dresden architect Woldemar Kandler until 1904, and it is also one of the architect's last new buildings in Saxony. Erlebach had lived and worked exclusively in South Tyrol from 1910 until the beginning of the Second World War, and during these decades had a decisive influence on the face of the city of Merano. The villa was renovated after 1999 and is currently (2010) used by Diakonie Döbeln. Two-storey plastered construction with a gable roof and dormers on a polygonal natural stone base, bay windows, balconies, canopies and slated gable zones loosen up the design. Building from the first years of independent activity by the architect who worked for the Dresden architect Woldemar Kandler until 1904. From 1910 until the beginning of the Second World War, Erlebach lived and worked exclusively in South Tyrol and had a decisive influence on the face of the city of Merano during these decades. re. 1876 | Architecturally and artistically of importance, Gründerzeit building, representative plastered building in a prominent urban corner location.
Three-storey apartment building in a corner, marked 1876 (the time the house was built). The three-story plastered building located in the city center significantly shapes the street scene through its location and high-quality facade design. The polygonal corner of the house jumps out slightly like a risk. The facade is significantly shaped by its plaster grooves on the ground floor and the pilaster strips that span across the floors. A stencil painting with Biedermeier motifs completes the facade. When the monument was registered in 2000, the original front door was preserved, as were the apartment doors with etched glass and the spiral staircase. As already mentioned, the building has a major impact on the street scene thanks to its urban structure and its high-quality design. Its authenticity, renovation in line with historic monuments and particularly typical characteristics are the reasons for its importance in terms of building history. The monument value results from the historical and urban significance of the building. Three-storey, stencil painting completes the facade, (Biedermeister motif), new windows, original front door, pilaster strips over several floors, slightly protruding corner projecting, noble entrance design, original apartment door with glass etchings, spiral staircase. |
