Ernst Wilhelm Paul
Ernst Wilhelm Paul (born August 17, 1856 in Adorf bei Arolsen , † February 8, 1931 in Dresden ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Ernst Paul spent his school and apprenticeship in Arolsen. He then passed the entrance exams to the Dresden Art Academy and began his studies there in 1874. His artistic abilities were quickly recognized and finally he became a master student of Johannes Schilling . He also worked on his commissions, such as the Niederwald monument . In 1883 he finished his studies with the silver medal of honor from the art academy. In the meantime he also studied for a short time at the Berlin Art Academy , but returned to Dresden and initially lived at Terrassenufer 25, he worked as a freelancer in his own studio at Blumenstrasse 31. He later lived at Dürerstrasse 127. At the famous international art exhibitions in Dresden he participated regularly from 1884. Since 1901 he was a member of the exhibition commission. In the beginning he mainly created church and sacred art and made numerous sculptures and reliefs on behalf of the Dresden churches and local communities. His reliefs and sculptures for the churches in Dresden can still be admired today. Later he created sculptures of well-known personalities, small sculptures and plastic facade decorations. His bronze figures were cast at the Dresden foundry Pirner und Franz . In 1899 he became an honorary member of the Dresden Art Cooperative. On this occasion, the cooperative presented a bronze relief with the portrait of Johannes Schilling. After a short illness he died on February 8, 1931 in Dresden and was buried in the Trinity cemetery.
