Residential stable house, barn and two side buildings of a four-sided courtyard Südstrasse 4
(map)
2nd half of the 19th century Closed courtyard with four buildings in visible half-timbered construction, the courtyard that defines the townscape thanks to the hillside location that is visible from afar, of architectural and scientific importance.

The place Berbersdorf, probably founded before the establishment of the Altzella monastery, was first mentioned in documents in 1428. While in the valley along the Dorfbach there are mainly cottages' properties, large four-sided farms characterize the hills and give the typical Waldhufendorf its unmistakable character. Monument qualification : The monument qualification of the four-sided courtyard at Südstraße 4, consisting of a residential stable house, a drive-through barn and two auxiliary buildings as well as a courtyard design, is based on its historical and site-defining (i.e. urban) importance. as well as its meaning. for the cultural landscape.
The stable house has an atypical position for the area within the courtyard structure, as it stands on the eaves of the actual main street (the south street is not to be seen as a main street, but as an access street). The two-storey building has two massive gables and a ground floor made of quarry stone. The frames of the windows and doors on the ground floor are made of Rochlitz porphyry tuff. The compartments of the half-timbered construction on the upper floor are closed with clay pegs. Attention should be drawn to the collar beam roof with a lying chair. Original have preserved u. a. the two-winged front door, some windows, shutters with hold-openers and hinge panels, inside the chamber passage with largely preserved doors is remarkable. The central corridor in the stable is laid out with floor tiles.
Opposite the stable house, a drive-through barn closes the farm off from the field. Two large gates allow the harvest to be brought in directly from the field without having to drive into the yard. A gate can be found on the courtyard side, which enables the passage through the barn. The barn, built almost entirely from quarry stone, has a half-timbered construction on the upper floor only on the courtyard side, a gable roof closes the building off at the top. Worth mentioning are two bans, the threshing floor with wooden plank path, the clay infill of the partition wall construction and the wooden gates with old fittings.
The two side buildings are two-story barns. The right one has a boarded half-timbered construction above the massive ground floor with a storage hatch to the courtyard, one gable is slated. The walls inside are filled with clay. Tenon wood connections were used in the collar beam roof (without a chair, with a ridge column), which is covered with large shingles. The original windows and a beautiful sliding gate with gate are worth mentioning.
On the left is the second stable barn, also with a solid ground floor and half-timbered upper floor. This is slated on the back, the windows are original. The rear part of the building was partially used as a horse stable. The partition wall is also a half-timbered construction closed with clay. The roof structure has been changed due to the installation of a hay elevator, the roof surface itself is covered with large shingles.
Of local and local historical interest is the fact that the courtyard complex was certainly not built until after the middle of the 19th century in the form that can still be found today (a farm building is marked with the year 1869), but with the traditional repertoire of forms and the typical landscape construction. The exception is the changed position of the stable house in the structure of the courtyard (eaves facing the main street) - this lifts the property out of the number of other preserved and listed farms.
The courtyard space, which is rarely preserved in the area, is almost unique; in the middle of the courtyard at Südstraße 4 there is an old tree. The property in question has a defining impact on the townscape (i.e. urban development) in that it makes a significant contribution to the characterization of the site due to its closed nature and elevated position.
Monument worthiness : The public interest in the preservation of the Vierseithof Südstraße 4 in Berbersdorf, Striegistal municipality, according to § 2 Paragraph 1 is given because the complex, due to its complexity and cohesion, the good original stock and the effect in the townscape, is an eloquent testimony to the rural building and way of life of the second half of the 19th century in the Mittweida district and thus has documentation value. Buildings erected during this time in a largely unadulterated state of preservation on the one hand, and the large four-sided courtyards that have come to us as closed ensembles on the other hand are becoming increasingly rare, so their preservation is urgently required. The row of the four-sided courtyards along the unusually straight Südstraße is a rarity, as a glance at an extract from the plan makes clear. The location of the homesteads on the street mentioned (Südstraße) and the corridor boundaries of the cultivated areas are a first-class example of the term Waldhufendorf that is out of the ordinary and therefore of scientific and documentary interest. Summary:

  • Residential stable house: two-storey building with a crooked roof, ground floor in stone, first floor in half-timbered with clay compartments
  • Side building: two-storey with a gable roof, ground floor in stone, first floor in half-timbered
  • Barn: half-timbered on the courtyard side, side walls in quarry stone, two high entrances,
  • Side building 2: already with changes, upper floor boarded up, ground floor in quarry stone, gable side is important for the view of the place

Observation tower
More pictures
Observation tower (Map) 1890/91 slender clinker tower of importance for the local history and landscape.

The weaving mill owner Carl Gustav Leonhardt had the observation tower built over the municipality of Böhrigen in 1890/91. In the chronicle of the 750th anniversary of the congregation, his niece wrote: “He absolutely loved the Böhrigen congregation and was so attached to it that he felt it was his congregation. ... This is how the 'Hohe Stein' with the wonderful view, the 'Wettinplatz', the benches at the weir, the observation tower and much more was created in his time. ”The design and execution of the tower was in the hands of the Roßwein-based construction company Clemens Koch (master builder ). The tower, including its parapet, which is no longer in existence, was 27.15 m high, the platform is 26 m above the ground. A wooden spiral staircase with originally 142 steps leads to the viewing platform. The tower rises above a polygonal base. The tower facade is structured by clinker strips, cornices and plastered surfaces in different shapes.
Due to its dominant position, the tower becomes a landmark, from which its landscape-defining significance is derived.
In Saxony, including this tower, around 65 observation towers have been designated as cultural monuments, which differ fundamentally in their design. Many of these towers were built at the same time as elevated water reservoirs or as monuments (Bismarck towers). The oldest of these towers were built in the 1st half of the 19th century, but most of the towers in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Most of the towers have a sophisticated architectural design that is in line with contemporary tastes. In this respect, the Böhriger observation tower is a typical example of this construction project.
The historical value of the tower results from this. Because each tower is based on an individual design, each tower is unique. This also applies to the observation tower described. The tower is both listed and worthy of monument and thus fulfills the criteria of a cultural monument.

Western stable house, southern and eastern side buildings of a four-sided courtyard Schmalbacher Strasse 5
(map)
around 1800 (1st side building) All half-timbered buildings, dominant position in the townscape, of architectural, social and economic importance.

The fact that the courtyard is suitable as a monument is based on its historical significance and the impact it has on the townscape. The structure of the property has retained its own character to this day. In particular, due to the dominant location in the townscape, the (almost) closed farmstead has a special role in shaping the village image.
Schmalbach emerged as a Waldhufendorf in the course of the German colonization in the east in the 12th century. Not far from the village, at a former traffic junction at which no less than seven streets converged, is the “Goldener Hirsch” inn, which was built at the instigation of Elector Frederick the Great and which he provided with tapping privileges. In the village itself, in addition to the very representative Hereditary Court, a courtyard with the year 1894, the property in question stands out because of its size and exposed location.
The Vierseithof Roßweiner Straße 5 consists of a residential stable from the 18th century, a side building built around 1800 and a ruinous barn from the 19th century. The youngest building is the stable barn with Kumthalle, built around 1900. Between the stable house and the stable barn is one of the extremely rarely preserved dairy houses. For the overall context, the courtyard paving is also of historical interest.
The residential stable house is the oldest building in the four-sided courtyard; it was probably built around 1750 (due to the importance of the courtyard, a dendrochronological examination of the building would be very desirable). An originally preserved half-timbered upper floor with clay infills rises above a massive ground floor. On the ground floor, window frames made of Rochlitz porphyry tuff stand out, the profiling of which by means of two covings indicates that the building was dated to the middle of the 18th century. What is striking about the broad, rectangular building is the very steep gable roof with a standing chair. Inside - despite some damage - the partitioning and access have been preserved, in the living room the windows with pressed basket arches and the wooden beam ceiling, which is worked as an insert ceiling, must be mentioned. The fact that the living room on the massive ground floor is closed with a wooden beam ceiling and the size of the courtyard as a whole point to the fact of a flourishing rural economy and a wealthy owner.
In the stable, which underwent some changes around 1900, Prussian caps can be found next to a groin vault, and feeding troughs with a rare self-trough have been preserved. The massive staircase below is continued in the upper area as a wooden staircase.
The side building, a stable barn, is accentuated by a two-bay kumthalle. Two brick arches rest on a pile made of Hilbersdorf porphyry tuff. The horse stable behind it has Prussian cap vaults. The ground floor consists of solid masonry (brick and quarry stone), window and door frames are made of Hilbersdorf porphyry tuff. A half-timbered construction with clay infills was chosen for the upper floor. The partition walls are also made of clay framework constructions, and clay ceilings can be found in the chambers. The construction of the gable roof is a collar beam roof with a double-standing chair, the gable tops are boarded up. The basement, made of rubble stones, has a barrel on belt arches.
The barn is, apart from a solid substructure barely one and a half meters high, a half-timbered construction completely closed with clay pegs, the roof was secured with corrugated iron for a long time. Unfortunately, the building has fallen into disrepair and can be described as ruinous.
If the remains of the wall still have to be removed, a later supplementary building in the cubature of the removed building must be requested.
The stable building dates from around the middle of the 18th century. It was rebuilt towards the end of the last century. With these measures, the possibly existing arcade could have been removed. Above the ground floor, which consists of quarry stones, there is a half-timbered floor, for which valuable, because expensive, oak was used. The partition walls inside are also filled with clay. The simple standing roof structure with flattened headbands on the chair column should be noted. Both gable sides have planking.

Monument worthiness :
The public interest in preserving the Vierseithof Roßweiner Straße 5 in Schmalbach, the so-called Radlerhof, is given because the complex is special in its size and representative shape, its original condition, its age and the structural quality of the individual buildings and the ensemble in the village represents. The farm is a very clear testimony to the demands of wealthy farmers in the area and is undoubtedly impressive due to the dominant location in the townscape. It is precisely such obvious and impressive evidence of rural building and lifestyle that needs to be preserved in the Saxon cultural landscape.
