The synagogue in Olnhausen , a district of the Jagsthausen community in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1881. The synagogue was at Rathausstrasse 42.

history

After the synagogue built in 1772/73 had become dilapidated , the construction of the new synagogue was carried out in the summer of 1881 according to the plans of the Neckarsulm official builder Lell.

The synagogue had almost 50 seats for men and more seats for women on the gallery . The lintel of the entrance to the old synagogue was also used in the new building, so that the year 1772 still stood above the entrance, as well as the Hebrew inscription from Psalm 118:19: "Open the gates of righteousness for me ..."

At the end of the 1920s, the number of Jewish community members had been reduced to seven families and a few single people due to the move. The minyan required for the worship service only met on Shabbat and on public holidays. The trader Nathan Gutmann, who was the municipal councilor of the bourgeoisie and head of the Jewish community, had served as a prayer leader on a voluntary basis since 1914 .

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was demolished by foreign National Socialists . Until 1972 the building served as a warehouse and barn. A savings bank branch was then built on the property. After this was closed, the savings bank building was converted into a residential and office building. In 2006 a new residential building was built over the property.

Commemoration

In November 2007 , a new plaque in memory of the former synagogue was unveiled in the presence of the former Federal President Roman Herzog , who was married to Alexandra Freifrau von Berlichingen for the second time and lived at Jagsthausen Castle .
