history

The castle goes back to the Lords of Husen in its medieval beginnings , but has been rebuilt and expanded several times, most recently very extensively from 1876 to 1878 by the Ulm minster builder August von Bayer .

The castle has served as a venue for the Jagsthausen Castle Festival since 1950 and has been marketed as a Götzenburg since around this time. In fact, the historical Götz only lived in this castle for a few years of his childhood and never owned the castle, which one of his older brothers inherited.

The castle, which is owned by the von Berlichingen family, is currently inhabited by Alexandra Freifrau von Berlichingen and the tenant family. Also, Roman Herzog , former Federal President and the late husband of Alexandra Baroness von Berlichingen lived in the last years before his death at the castle.

Until 2014, there were two memorial stones in the park of the castle for the dead of the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division "Götz von Berlichingen" and the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking" , two units of the Waffen-SS who were also involved in the war. and end- stage crimes were involved. These stones were removed after protests.

investment

The complex, which is surrounded by a moat , still has considerable building fabric from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Jagsthausen consists of a palace with Knights' Hall , a women's shelter with bower , a dungeon and a Dienstbotenbau with large corner towers. In the castle museum in one of the corner towers, weapons and Roman antiquities as well as the two original Iron Hands of Götz von Berlichingen are shown. A park with romantic ruins architecture from the 19th century surrounds the castle.
