Neuenstadt Castle

The Castle New City is a castle in Neuenstadt in the district of Heilbronn in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

Building history

There was probably a Roman fort on the site in antiquity. A castle belonging to the Lords of Weinsberg has been documented since 1392, and was demolished from 1560 to 1564 by Duke Christoph von Württemberg . The New Palace followed in 1565 as an originally four-wing new building. The oldest part of the castle is the so-called Dürnitzbau or Dürnizbau , which was probably built by Heinrich Schickhardt , who was active in Neuenstadt at this time. In the 16th century, a round, outer corner tower of the castle was also built, to which the east wing (called the Lindenbau or Prinzessenbau ) connected, which was built in the second half of the 17th century. The linden tree reached from that corner tower to the church. At the same time, the so-called new building or stone building, which delimited the castle courtyard to the west and south-west. In 1826, however, the new building was demolished again. The east wing was given a wooden gallery after the Second World War after the upper floor was badly damaged by an air raid in April 1945.

Castle garden

The palace garden was laid out in 1621 by Duke Friedrich Achilles von Württemberg as an area of 2.5 hectares. In 1826 the palace garden was divided by the construction of the road to Bürg and the upper part was sold. In 1830 parts of the palace gardens were again sold to the city of Neuenstadt to expand the market square and to private owners, so that the palace gardens were only a fraction of its original area.

use

Open-air stage in the castle moat

From 1617 to 1781 the castle was the residence of the Württemberg-Neuenstadt noble family . The castle was uninhabited from 1781. However, it was used as a fruit store and from 1806 to 1815 served as a barracks for a garrison stationed in Neuenstadt. Furthermore, the Dürnitzbau since 1829 was the seat of the Kameralamts . In the 19th century, the corner tower served as the seat of the forestry office and as the forester's apartment. Since 1958 the Neuenstadt open-air theater has been held in the Schlossgraben every summer .
