Schomberg Castle is a classicistic castle near Stebbach , a district of Gemmingen in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg .

history

The castle was built to the west of Streichenberg Castle on a hilltop that had not been built up until then, from 1820 to 1826 according to plans by Karl August Schwarz for Hans Christoph Graf von Degenfeld-Schonburg . Architect Schwarz was the master builder in Bruchsal and built the town hall in nearby Eppingen at the same time, also in the classicist style .

The castle is currently still inhabited by the Degenfeld family and cannot be visited.

description

The main portal of the two-and-a-half-story castle, built on a square floor plan, is located on the seven- axis east side of the building. The door frame has a lion's head- like envy head . The middle three window axes of the east and west façade are each combined in a central projectile. To the west, three arched doors lead over a garden terrace into the castle park. The north and south sides are only open in four window axes, which are also framed in a central projectile. The sight lines of the castle run north to Steinsberg Castle and south to the Eppinger parish church of Our Lady .

Inside the castle there is a round gallery, which is spanned by a cassette-like round vault, the end ring of which forms a skylight that illuminates the gallery in the center of the building with the broadly curved access staircase. The splendid floor patterns in some rooms are also architecturally significant.

To the south of the castle is the associated farm yard , to the west and north there is an English landscape park with unusual planting, including pimpernut , giant hogweed , wig bush and tulip trees , to the east there is a natural forest and park landscape. The Schomberg-Streichenberg area has been under landscape protection since January 31, 1979.
