Detailed memorial texts

  1. The sandstone monolith erected by Markscheider Städter at Weisbach's instigation in October 1865 stands on the Sandberg south of the city. The building permit was granted by the city of Frauenstein. The free all-round view is now restricted in a south-westerly direction by a water tank. The south-facing inscription is difficult to read. Their content seems to deviate from the usual standardization. A height bolt is located below the slightly offset writing field. In the period from 1862 to 1890, a land survey was carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony, in which two triangular networks were formed. On the one hand, there is the network for grade measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony (network I. class / order) with 36 points and the royal Saxon triangulation (network II. Class / order) with 122 points. This national survey was led by Prof. Christian August Nagel , according to which the triangulation columns are also referred to as Nagel’s columns . This surveying system was one of the most modern layer networks in Germany. The surveying columns set for this purpose remained almost entirely in their original locations. They are an impressive testimony to the history of land surveying in Germany and in Saxony. The system of surveying columns of both orders is in its entirety a cultural monument of supraregional importance. (LfD / 2013).
  2. Castle ruins. Large parts of the complex preserved on a steeply rising rock cone, first mentioned in a document in 1272. In the first phase of construction around 1200, the main castle with the two striking towers was erected. E. in the 13th century construction of the palace and in the 1st half of the 14th century construction of the large curtain wall. After completion of the New Palace (around 1588) no longer inhabited, but in 1615 the castle chapel was renewed. The complex was finally destroyed by a conflagration in 1683, restorations in 1968, 1990 and since 1992. Essential parts of the two-tower complex have been preserved: the mighty north tower (Dicker Merten) with a floor plan shifted to a parallelogram with rounded corners, inside the basement and ground floor with barrel vaults , on the southwest side of the late Romanesque round arch portal. Then the hall, here still three window openings of the former castle chapel and vaulted utility rooms have been preserved. The main castle is closed off by the ruins of the large south tower, formerly with three vaulted floors and a chimney, and the prison. These buildings and the small courtyard with a cistern are surrounded by the inner wall with loopholes on the southeast and northeast sides. A bridge leads from the inner courtyard on the west side to the parapet walk of the curtain wall, which has been preserved in its total length of approx. 250 m, half of which is at the original height with six of the former seven circular wall towers. Refurbished, repairing retaining wall.
  3. Frauenstein Castle:
    • New castle, now a museum, living and conference rooms. Built directly below the castle by the electoral master builder Hans Irmisch 1585–88, damage caused by fire in the 17th and 18th centuries. Two three-storey tracts that meet at right angles (two-storey on the upper courtyard side) with hipped roof and dormers. In the corner of the stately Wendelstein towering above the roof of the castle, the round-arched sandstone portal with gable top, hood and lantern. The main portal on the lower tract in Tuscan order, with seat stones, in the top the coat of arms of the builder Heinrich von Schönberg and his wife, probably around 1585 by Samuel Lorentz the Elder. Ä. created (replaced by a copy in 1994). On the Wendelstein as well as under the eaves of the adjoining wing structures, ornamental plaster tape has been preserved. Hall and entrance hall on the ground floor with groin vaults , several arched portals. The precious furnishings were destroyed in the town fire of 1728.
    • Gatehouse: around 1590, three-storey, plastered quarry stone building with adjoining farm building, gate passage with groin vault, 1st floor sandstone walls, 2nd floor winter window, hipped roof and dormer windows
    • Farm building: single-storey with a gable roof and two large gates, enclosure walls and farm buildings in the upper courtyard.
  4. The "silver washing" mainly processed silver ores from the Reichenau mines "Friedrich August" and "Friedrich Christoph", the most important mines in the region (mining has been documented here since the 14th century, mining district belonged to the Outer Freiberg ore district, economically of regional importance) , The processing plant originally consisted of a large single-storey building with a gable roof, the centrally located water wheel was acted upon by water from the Gimmlitz and on the one hand drove the stamps of two stamping mills for the purpose of crushing ore and on the other hand the herd for the purpose of separating the stamped material into ore and waste rock originally there was also a smelter on site, the facilities were probably operated until the 2nd half of the 16th century, later the facility fell into disrepair, and the structural remains of the silver washing facility were exposed and partially reconstructed from 2006 onwards.
  5. In 1722, the Electorate of Saxony began to erect the Saxon post-mile pillars. Elector Friedrich August I wanted to build a modern traffic and transport control system in the electorate in order to promote trade and economy. He entrusted Magister Adam Friedrich Zürner (1679–1742) with the implementation. The system of post mile pillars comprised distance pillars, quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars. The distance columns should be set up in the cities in front of the city gates, later only on the marketplaces. Quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars were set up along the Poststrasse. They received a consecutive numbering (row number), starting from the beginning of the measurement. The all-mile columns were set up outside the cities on the post roads at a distance of 1 mile (= 9.062 km). The distance pillars were marked with the monogram "AR" for "Augustus Rex", the Electoral Saxon and Polish-Lithuanian double coat of arms and the Polish royal crown. The full mile, half mile columns and quarter milestones were all similarly labeled, none of them had a coat of arms, but the monogram "AR". The distances were given in hours (1 hour = ½ post mile = 4.531 km). This mile system was the first European traffic management system. The pillar considered here is of great importance in the history of traffic as part of the nationally significant postal system.
  6. Evangelical City Church. In the arched style, after fire in 1869, rebuilt from 1871–73 according to plans by Emil Alwin Gottschaldt using a predecessor house, probably completed around 1490, the tower according to plans by Karl Moritz Haenel , restorations 1968–71 and 1989–93. 7. Built as the Hitler Youth Home in 1938 according to plans by the Dresden architect Ernst Erich Schierz. Used as a municipal office after 1945, later a residential building. In the past few years, largely true to the original. Built in a dominant location next to the old school, the building, which has been adapted to the typical landscape design, has a major impact on the townscape. This building, built as a union house, is a two-story half-timbered house with a visible quarry stone ground floor and a visible half-timbered structure on the upper floor, which is closed off by a steep gable roof. The representative entrance to the house with originally a double-winged front door and an outside staircase is located approximately in the middle of the facing eaves side. In its architectural language, the house is a typical example of the deliberately chosen local style of construction of the Nazi era, which is based on the Heimatschutz style that existed before 1933. The house served the local Hitler Youth as a meeting and event center. The Hitler Youth homes were to be built in the communities in order to achieve a nationwide opportunity to ideologically influence the youth in the sense of National Socialism. National feelings should be consciously addressed. The architectural language chosen for this house is a significant example of this. As a contemporary document of this propaganda, the building is of great historical importance. As a typical and authentic example of this architecture of the Nazi era, which was particularly preferred in rural areas, the building is also becoming important in terms of architectural history. (LfD / 2012).
