Hans Irmisch (* 1526 in Stollberg ; † September 16, 1597 at Hoheneck Castle in Stollberg) was a master builder from Saxony .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Irmisch went to the royal seat of Dresden around 1550 , where he participated in the fortification work of Elector Moritz . In 1554 he was granted citizenship of Dresden. In the following years Irmisch, who presumably had qualified as a mason by the foreman, received training from the Dresden master builder Caspar Voigt von Wierandt . In the years 1554–1558 he was involved with Hans von Dehn-Rothfelser in the construction of the Grillenburg hunting lodge . It is believed that Irmisch was involved in the construction of the Dresden armory from 1559 to 1563 . There is evidence of his work in the construction of the monuments for the burial place of Elector Moritz in Freiberg Cathedral around 1560, where he was again active in the construction of the royal crypt in 1592.

In 1563, Elector August appointed the foreman Irmisch as the elector's sub-builder. Before that, repair work was carried out on Torgau Castle Hartenfels under his direction . Irmisch supervised all stately buildings and directed the renovation work.

According to his plans made in 1564, the establishment of the chancellery at Dresden Stallhof (1565–1567), the renovation of Freudenstein Castle and the construction of the castle chapel in Freiberg (1566). The construction work on the Prettiner Lichtenburg, which began in 1564, and the construction of the Sitzenroda hunting lodge, which was completed in 1570, were also under his direction. In 1568, Elector August dismissed him.

After his renewed appointment as a master builder in 1570, he managed the dam construction work that had begun to protect against flooding along the Elbe and Weißeritz in Dresden. From 1571, together with Paul Buchner , he directed the construction work on the Dresden fortifications . Together with Buchner, Irmisch, who was electoral fortress builder in 1577 as the successor of Count Lynar , led the renovations of the Dresden Mint and the Wilschen Tor (1586–1588) as well as the construction of the stable courtyard (1586–1591) and the construction of the small castle courtyard with two-storey gatehouse and arcade (1589–1594) at the Dresden Residenzschloss .

At that time, Irmisch was also active outside of Dresden, in 1573 he delivered an expert report on Hoheneck Castle in Stollberg, the renovation of which he directed in 1597 as his last work. He also led the completion of the construction of the Sonnenstein Castle above Pirna, which began under Lynar and according to his plans . In 1574, Irmisch also submitted an expert opinion on the electoral Osterstein Castle in Zwickau , and in the following year his activities on lordly buildings such as Stolpen Castle , the Grillenburg hunting lodge and in Sangerhausen , Coburg and Freiberg can be proven. The establishment of the “electoral house” in the Bleesern court stud near Wittenberg in 1578 most likely goes back to Irmisch. Between 1578 and 1581 Irmisch was in charge of the rebuilding of the Runneburg to Schloss Weißensee and from 1584 rebuilding and expansion of the Colditz Castle .

In addition to palace buildings, Irmisch also designed fortresses; The best known is the expansion of the Königstein fortress under Christian I in the period from 1589 to 1594 with the construction of the Christianburg and the pleasure house.

According to Irmisch's plans, the redesign, which was completed in 1586, included the construction of the Augusteum at Wittenberg University , the reconstruction of the Breitenburg Palace near Itzehoe and, from 1585 to 1588, the new construction of the Frauenstein Palace . Mining and metallurgy facilities were also built under his direction, including the operating buildings of the Poserna Saline, founded in 1578, and the Dresden smelting works built in 1582 in the small Ostravorwerk .

On behalf of the Saxon Hereditary Marshal Hans Löser, he managed the new construction of the Pretzsch Castle on the Elbe from 1571 to 1574 .

Irmisch died in 1597 during the renovation work on Hoheneck Castle.
