Life
Christian August Nagel studied engineering from 1841 to 1844 at the Technical College in Dresden. He then worked as a railway and surveying engineer. In 1849 he became assistant for geodesy and in 1852 first full teacher for geodesy at the Royal Saxon Polytechnic School in Dresden, to which the Technical Educational Institute was renamed in 1851 due to its growing importance. In 1858 he was appointed full professor here. In 1888 he became director of the mathematical-physical salon in the Dresden Zwinger. Until his retirement in 1893 he was in charge of the collection for practical geometry and higher geodesy , which was set up and kept here , including two theodolites and two planimeters . He received several awards, including the Knight's Cross 1st Class in 1872 and the title of Privy Councilor in 1884 . In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Christian August Nagel died on October 23, 1903 at the age of 82; his grave is in the old Annenfriedhof .
Act
His life's work was the Royal Saxon Triangulation , where he was responsible for the measurement of the 1st and 2nd order networks as well as the evaluation and calculation work from 1862 to 1890 or carried out these himself. As early as August 29, 1858, he gave a lecture on original dimensions and systems of dimensions in the assembly of practical surveyors in Leipzig .
Nagel columns and plaques
In Oßling there is a column erected in 1864, the so-called Nagelsche column , a first-order station. The inscription reads “Station Ossling der Mitteleurop. Degree measurement, K. Sachsen, 1864 “ .
The inscription of another plaque in Oßling reads:
"Original marking (Nagelsche column) of a point of the European (initially 'Central European') degree measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony. This scientific survey, created between 1862 and 1890 to determine the shape and size of the earth, was the life's work of the Saxon geodesy professor August Nagel (1821–1903). The pillar was recovered from its original location approx. 750 m away due to the quarry expansion and then erected here as a surveying and local history monument by the Oßling municipal administration in cooperation with the Land Surveying Office of Saxony. 1993 "
In October 2003 a memorial plaque for him was unveiled on the Borsberg on the surveying column.
