Caranx Crysos (in English "Blue runner" or "Bluestripe jack") is a species of fish from the genus Caranx in the family of jacks (Carangidae).

description

The body is oval-elongated and narrow on the sides. With a maximum size of 70 cm, Caranx crysos can weigh up to 5.1 kg. The color in the middle-above from the head to the back varies from bluish-green to olive-green and is silver-gray to brass-colored on the lower body from the lower part of the body (mouth) to the black fin. The breast is flaky.

The species has a total of 35 to 42 gill rakes ; 10 to 14 on the upper section and 25 to 28 on the lower section of the gill arch, this being the only characteristic that distinguishes Caranx crysos from Caranx caballus . There are 25 vertebrae.

distribution

Its habitat extends from the west Mediterranean to ( Nova Scotia ) south-east of Canada and the west coast of Africa to Brazil , in the South Atlantic and also in the Caribbean . As a rule, Caranx crysos lives in schools near the coast, also in brackish water. However, it has also been sighted in water depths over 100 m. This species is an extremely fast swimming predatory fish and is also known to eat dolphin feces. In addition to being important predators, they are important prey for many larger species, including fish, birds, and dolphins.

Reproduction

Depending on the habitat , Caranx crysos reaches sexual maturity at a length of approx. 22.5 and 28 cm. They are likely to spawn in the open sea. Females produce between 41,000 and 1,546,000 eggs on average (larger fish produce more eggs than smaller ones). Eggs and fish larvae are pelagic . As the fish grow up, they often migrate to lagoons and reefs near the mainland before slowly reaching deeper outer reefs at the onset of sexual maturity
