Caranx is a genus of the jacks (Carangidae)consisting of 18 species. Caranx species are found in tropical and subtropical zones of the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans .

features

Caranx species are 55 to 170 cm long. They are high-backed, strongly flattened on the sides and have the typical mackerel shape with a deeply drawn head profile. Your upper jaws are covered with an outer row of medium-sized to strong fangs and an inner row of smaller teeth. The lower jaw has only one row of teeth. The ploughshare is also toothed.

The pectoral fins are sickle-shaped and, in adults, longer than the head. The edge of the cleithrum is smooth, with no posterior papillae. The dorsal fin, supported by hard fin rays, is less high than the soft rayed. The sideline runs below the hard-radiating dorsal fin near the back and bends behind it to the center of the side. Of the approximately 25 to 56 lateral line scales, the rear ones are provided with long spines that can be as long and high as the diameter of the eye. The tail fin stalk has a pair of keels on each side, pits are missing. The caudal fin is always strongly forked.

Overall, the genus is poorly described and the demarcation to related genera is not clearly defined .
