Joseph Paul Gaimard (born January 31, 1793 in Saint-Zacharie , Département Var , † December 10, 1858 in Paris ) was a French surgeon , naturalist , ichthyologist and zoologist .

Gaimard studied medicine at the Naval School in Toulon and joined the French Navy in 1816. Together with the researcher Jean René Constant Quoy , he served between 1817 and 1820 as a marine surgeon on the ships Uranie and Physicienne , which circumnavigated the globe under Louis de Freycinet . The Urania shipwrecked the Falkland Islands and returned on the Physicienne that was sent as a replacement. Upon returning, he wrote a report on the zoological results with Quoy. In 1826 he visited natural history museums in Europe in preparation for another expedition. He circumnavigated the world again in 1826 and 1829 under Jules Dumont d'Urville on the Astrolabe . A diary of his journey with Uranie has survived, but it is incomplete. After the end of his second circumnavigation, he published a report on the zoological results. He also traveled to Russia to investigate a cholera outbreak, which was one of the first European reports of the epidemic, which was then new in Europe.

From 1835 to 1836 he was scientific director of the expedition to Iceland and Greenland on the La Recherche . From 1838 to 1840 he was head of the scientific commission for the north and traveled to Svalbard , northern Norway, Lapland , the Faroe Islands and Arkhangelsk. In 1839 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

At least three species were named after him:

He never married. In 1848 he retired and died in poverty. Little is known about his later life.
