Henrik Nikolai Krøyer (born March 22, 1799 in Copenhagen ; † February 14, 1870 there ) was a Danish zoologist .

Life

Krøyer first studied medicine at the University of Copenhagen and then switched to history and philology. With a few other students he was a volunteer in the Greek independence movement. After his return he turned to zoology. From 1827 he was a teacher in Stavanger , where he married Bertha Cecilie Gjesdal. Both adopted his sister-in-law's son, the later painter Peder Severin Krøyer . In 1830 he was back in Copenhagen as a teacher of natural history at the Military Academy (Academy of Country Cadets, 1830/31) and then at various Copenhagen schools. From 1834 onwards he was engaged in researching Denmark's fish stocks on behalf of the state, which led to his main work on Danish fish. From 1847 until his resignation for health reasons in 1869, he was an inspector at the Natural History Museum in Copenhagen. In 1845 he became a lecturer in zoology at the veterinary school. In 1853 he received the title of professor.

He was the founder and editor of the journal Naturhistorisk Tidskrift. It had to temporarily stop its publication as part of a protracted dispute between the Danish zoologists over the appointment of Japetus Steenstrup as professor of zoology in Copenhagen. Until then, Steenstrup had hardly emerged as a zoologist and his appointment was a heavy blow for Krøyer, who had made himself very hopeful of succeeding Johannes Christopher Hageman Reinhardt (1776–1845). On his side stood among others Jørgen Matthias Christian Schiødte , his successor as editor of the Naturhistorisk Tidkskrift.

He dealt mainly with fish and crustaceans in Denmark, but he also visited the coasts of Western Europe, Svalbard (1838/39) and Newfoundland (1853/54). He is best known for his work on the fish of Denmark.

His brother was the Danish composer Hans Ernst Krøyer (1798–1879). He composed the melody for the Danish national anthem (Der he et yndigt land).

In 1840 he became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences . In 1842 he received an honorary doctorate in Rostock. In 1862 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . With Daniel Frederik Eschricht he was one of the founders of Naturhistorisk Forening.
