Daniel Frederik Eschricht (born March 18, 1798 in Copenhagen ; † February 22, 1863 ) was a Danish doctor (physiology, anatomy) and zoologist.

Life

After graduating in medicine in 1822, Eschricht first practiced as a doctor on Bornholm and then was with François Magendie (1783–1855) in Paris in 1824/25 , who taught him experimental physiology. He received his doctorate in 1825 on the function and anatomy of some cranial nerves and then studied for three years with leading comparative anatomists in Europe, including Georges Cuvier . He then taught physiology at the University of Copenhagen, from 1830 as a professor of physiology and later also for anatomy.

Eschricht turned more and more to natural history and, as a zoologist, was particularly concerned with whales. He also wrote a study on Kaspar Hauser ( lack of understanding or bad education , Berlin 1858).

Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs was one of his students and he worked with the paleontologist Peter Wilhelm Lund .

Honors

In 1837 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , 1855 a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences , 1856 an external member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , 1860 a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and 1863 a member of the American Philosophical Society .
