Peder Severin Krøyer grew up with his aunt in Copenhagen. His talent was already evident in childhood. That's why he came to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 14 . As a young artist he went on study trips to France, Spain and Italy from 1877 to 1881, supported by the Copenhagen patron Heinrich Hirschsprung . He found inspiration particularly in Paris, where he attended a private painting school. Soon after his return to Copenhagen, he became a sought-after portrait painter in his home country.

In the summer of 1882 Krøyer came to Skagen for the first time . From now on he came there every summer. He was particularly enthusiastic about nature and the company with other artists. From 1891 he came with his wife Marie . In 1894 they rented the former city bailiwick in the Skagen Forest and converted it.

His landscape and portrait painting are famous. His pictures show the carefree life of the artists, their parties, walks on the beach and atmospheric evenings in the moonlight.

After 1900 Krøyer became mentally ill and had to be treated several times in the mental hospital in Middelfart . Presumably he suffered from manic-depressive psychosis. His grave is in the Skagen cemetery.

One of his best-known master students was the poster artist and genre painter Brynolf Wennerberg . A number of his main works are now in Den Hirschsprungske Samling in Copenhagen.
