history

The first inhabitants of today's community were the Etruscans , dating back to the 6th century BC. BC. In Roman times occupied by this, the place was first mentioned in 1084, when he was able to explain to the free commune and gave up their own statutes. In the 12th century , the place briefly fell under the control of the Republic of Siena , which shortly thereafter lost control to Arezzo. In 1336 the place fell to the Florentines, who built the city walls and fought against several attempts by Arezzo to recapture the place. In 1387 Foiano again achieved the status of commune, this time under the leadership of the Republic of Florence. The Battle of Scannagallo ( Battaglia di Scannagallo , also called Battaglia di Marciano ) took place on August 2, 1554 in the district of Pozzo della Chiana . The Republic of Florence under Gian Giacomo Medici defeated the Republic of Siena under Piero Strozzi and thus advanced further towards Siena, in order to finally take it in 1555. With Florence, Foiano was also incorporated into the Duchy of Tuscany . In 1788, Grand Duke Leopold I commissioned Vittorio Fossombroni from Arezzo to complete the construction of drains to make the swamps of the Chiana Valley fertile. With the exception of the Napoleonic occupation from 1799 to 1814, the municipality remained in the Duchy of Tuscany until the unification of Italy and was then added to the province of Arezzo.

Like almost all places in the province, Foiano suffered greatly from the German occupation and the withdrawal of them during World War II. The English military cemetery that still exists today is a witness of this time.
