Chitignano is a municipality with 907 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Arezzo in the Tuscany region in Italy .

Location of Chitignano in the province of Arezzo

The community extends over around 15  km² . It is located about 25 km north of the provincial capital Arezzo and about 55 km east of the regional capital Florence in the mountain valley of the Casentino and in the Alpe di Catenaia . The most important river in the municipality is the Rassina flowing below the village , which spends 6 of its 15 km here. The place is in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in Zone E, 2531 GR / G and is part of the Unione dei Comuni Montani del Casentino .

The districts include Rosina (483  m , approx. 60 inhabitants) and Taena (511 m, approx. 13 inhabitants). The districts of Croce di Sarna and La Casa overlap with the municipality of Chiusi della Verna .

The neighboring municipalities are Caprese Michelangelo , Chiusi della Verna and Subbiano .

history

The place was first documented on December 7, 967 as Clotiniano in a diploma from Otto I, the Great . Thereafter, the place was owned for a long time by the Counts of Chiusi (della Verna) and the Ubertini until it came under the rule of Guido Tarlati , Archbishop of Arezzo, in 1325 . With taking the metropolitan area by the Republic of Florence in 1385 the city fell to the under Florentine control Ubertini back and later became the Duchy of Tuscany incorporated, but remained independent county until 1779, when Leopold II. To feudalism abolished in Tuscany. The community was founded in 1780 when Taena and Rosina joined Chitignano as districts. Important branches of the local economy were gunpowder production, tobacco growing and the tobacco trade until it was banned in 1830, as well as the smuggling of goods. Most of the gunpowder factories were destroyed by German troops around 1944, the last one closed in 1966. The place is still known today for its mineral-rich rivers Rassina and Il Rio .
