history
The place was created in 1873 as a merger of the previously independent municipalities Ortignano and Raggiolo . The name of Ortignano was mentioned for the first time in 1247 and probably comes from the Roman name Hortinius, whereas the name of Raggiolo was attested as early as 967, still under the name Ragiola. It comes from the Latin word radius , here in the sense of borderline . The districts of Badia a Tega, Frassina and Uzzano Casentinese belonged to Ortignano, but Raggiolo had none. In the 13th century Ortignano belonged to the Counts Guidi , who built the castle there. Raggiolo, on the other hand, belonged to the Ubertini family. In the following century both places were occupied by the Republic of Florence and Charles IV gave them to the Bishop of Arezzo, Boso degli Ubertini. From there on, the two communities belonged continuously to the Duchy of Tuscany , with the exception of the Napoleonic occupation at the beginning of the 19th century .
