Saint-Marc is a port city in the Artibonite department in northern Haiti . The city is located on Road 1 and 100, around 80 kilometers northwest of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince . In 2009 there were 127,747 inhabitants in Saint-Marc. More than 242,000 people lived in the entire community in 2009.

In addition to the port - one of the most important in the country - and the churches of Saint-Marc ( Catholic ), the Adventist Church and the Baptist Church, there are eight schools in Saint-Marc, the St. Nicolas Hospital, a distillery, a prison, a cemetery, a soccer field and a football field as well as the Place Publice .

history

The city was founded by the French in 1695 near an old Taíno settlement. In 1905 the Compagnie Nationale built a 100 km long railway line between Port-au-Prince and Saint-Marc.

In 2004 there were serious clashes between government opponents and the security forces in Haiti. In February 2004, 50 opposition activists are said to have been killed in Saint-Marc during the unrest . Former Haitian Prime Minister Yvon Neptune was therefore arrested in June 2004 on charges of ordering the Saint-Marc massacre.
