Terranuova Bracciolini is a municipality with 12,259 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Arezzo in the Tuscany region in Italy .

Location of Terranuova Bracciolini in the province of Arezzo

The community extends over around 85  km² . It is located about 25 km northwest of the provincial capital Arezzo and 35 km southeast of the regional capital Florence on the Arno and in the upper Arno valley ( Valdarno superiore ). Other important bodies of water in the municipality are the Torrenti Ascione (every 8 km in the municipality) and Ciuffenna (11 of 22 km in the municipality). The place is in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone D, 1971 GR / G

The districts ( frazioni ) include Campogialli (253  m , approx. 250 inhabitants), Castiglione Ubertini (250 m, approx. 20 inhabitants), Cicogna (254 m, approx. 300 inhabitants), Malva-Nuova-Squarcia (303 m, approx. 125 inhabitants), Montemarciano (252 m, approx. 180 inhabitants), Penna (202 m, approx. 600 inhabitants), Persignano (250 m, approx. 100 inhabitants), Piantravigne (255 m, approx. 140 inhabitants), Tasso (251 m, approx. 50 inhabitants), Traiana (276 m, approx. 100 inhabitants), Treggiaia (196 m, approx. 50 inhabitants) and Ville (155 m, approx. 430 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Castelfranco Piandiscò , Castiglion Fibocchi , Laterina Pergine Valdarno , Loro Ciuffenna , Montevarchi and San Giovanni Valdarno .

history

At first the place was called Castel Santa Maria and was created from 1337 to 1348 by the Florentines as terra murata (fortified place) based on the model of Scarperia and Firenzuola . The name affix Bracciolini has been used since 1862 in honor of Poggio Bracciolini . During the Second World War, the place suffered considerable damage. All four city gates, Porta Fiorentina, Porta Ciuffenna, Porta Campana (San Pietro) and Porta Campana (San Niccolò), were lost.

  • Arcipretura di Santa Maria , also Santa Maria Bambina , main church in the center. The church was built from 1337 and was under the Pieve di San Pietro a Gropina until 1443. Then it became an independent Pieve .
  • Chiesa di San Biagio ai Mori , church in the center from the 14th century.
  • San Donato in Ganghereta , church in the town center. Originated in 1933 from the Church of San Niccolò.
  • San Benedetto , church in the center from the 17th century.

  • Chiesa di San Bartolomeo al Pozzo , church in the center from the 14th century. Contains a work by Gregorio Pagani ( Crocifissione con la Madonna ei Santi Bartolomeo, Nicola e Agata )

  • Convento di Ganghereto , outside the city walls, built in the 18th century on a much older Franciscan convent.
