history

The first inhabitants of the area were Etruscans , who probably belonged to the sphere of influence of the Etruscan rulers from Chiusi . Necklaces, ceramics and the so-called Torso di Marciano (a warrior figure that is now in the Arezzo Archaeological Museum) were found here and date back to the 6th century BC. Attributed to BC . The historical center, on the other hand, dates from Roman times . The place, or the district of Cesa, is mentioned for the first time in a document by Elemperto, Bishop of Arezzo, issued on March 25, 1008. Marciano himself is first mentioned in 1084 in a listing of the Badia di San Quercio delle Rose monastery (also Nasciano called, near Pozzo della Chiana or Pozzo in Val di Chiana, today the municipality of Foiano della Chiana). In the 12th century the place became a free municipality and then fell under the rule of the Aretines, who expanded the fortress (Rocca) and the city walls. When Arezzo got into a crisis, the Republic of Siena took its place in 1382 and strengthened the fortress. But just two years later, Marciano was captured by the Republic of Florence. In 1439 the condottiere Bernardino della Carda conquered the place, which was quickly liberated from Florence. The Battle of Scannagallo ( Battaglia di Scannagallo , named after a moat south of Marciano between Pozzo della Chiana and Santa Luce , also called Battaglia di Marciano ) took place on August 2, 1554. The Republic of Florence under Gian Giacomo Medici defeated the Republic of Siena under Piero Strozzi . With the Republic of Florence, the municipality entered the Duchy of Tuscany and remained there (with the exception of the Napoleonic occupation from 1799 to 1814) until the unification of Italy .
