Castiglion Fiorentino is an Italian municipality (comune) with 13,183 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Arezzo in Tuscany .
geography
Castiglion Fiorentino is located about 15 km south of the provincial capital Arezzo and 80 km southeast of the regional capital Florence at 342 m slm in the foothills of the Apennines between the valleys Valdichiana and Val di Chio. It lies in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in Zone E, 2 159 GR / G. The mild climate and fertile soil provide good cultivation opportunities in agriculture . The most important bodies of water in the municipality include the Torrenti Mucchia (7 of 24 km in the municipality) and Nestore (4 of 14 km in the municipality) and the Canale maestro della Chiana (7 of 51 km in the municipality).

The municipal area is delimited to the north by the municipality of Arezzo and to the south and east by the municipality of Cortona . The neighboring communities to the west are Foiano della Chiana and Marciano della Chiana .
history
- 6th century BC BC: First settlements by Etruscans .
- 202 BC Chr .: The place is mentioned by Publius Cornelius Scipio .
- 10th century: The name Castiglione appears for the first time.
- 1289: Castiglion Fiorentino comes under the rule of Florence .
- 1799: French take the place.
- 1814: After Napoleon , the place becomes Italian again and from now on belongs to Tuscany .
Attractions
- Chiesa di Sant'Angelo al Cassero , former church mentioned in 1191. Was Pieve from the 12th century until 1325 and then lost the title to San Giuliano. Today it is the seat of the Pinacoteca .
- Collegiata di San Giuliano , a church built in 1840 from the Pieve Vecchia and parts of the Santa Maria Novella church . Contains by Bartolomeo della Gatta the work Madonna con Bambino in trono ei Santi Pietro, Paolo, Giuliano e Michele (1486) and by Segna di Bonaventura a Madonna in trono , also known as Maestà (comes from Pieve Vecchia , also Pieve di San Giuliano ) .
- Chiesa di Sant'Agostino , 13th century church that was taken over by the Augustinians in 1333. Contains the work La probatica piscina by Giovanni Battista Paggi .
- Chiesa di San Francesco , church built in the 13th century. Contains the work Crocifissione (1594) by Francesco Morandini (called Il Poppi ) and a Vocazione di San Matteo (around 1650) by Salvi Castellucci .
- Chiesa di Santo Stefano , also called San Lazzo , church consecrated in 1350.
- Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie del Rivaio , church just outside the city walls near the Porta Fiorentina, which was consecrated in 1624. Contains the Baccio da Montelupo-like wooden cross Crocifisso.
- Chiesa della Madonna della Consolazione , church near the Porta Romana, built in 1607.
- Pieve dei Santi Ippolito e Cassiano in the district of Retina, probably built in the 8th century.
- Palazzo Comunale , 16th century town hall, restored in 1935.
- Torre del Cassero , tower in the center of the castle, built in the 14th century on the basis of a previous Etruscan structure.
- Museo Archeologico
- Villa La Fontina , villa just outside the city walls. Was first documented on February 28, 1666 when Baldassarre Bolognini built the adjacent chapel of the Santissima Annunziata. Has belonged to the Brozzi family since then and was passed on to the Corgna in 1963 .
Events
- Palio dei Rioni di Castiglion Fiorentino , since 1932 (annually since 1977) held Palio of the city thirds Cassero (white and blue), Porta Fiorentina (green and orange) and Porta Romana (red and yellow). The horse race takes place every third Sunday in June in Piazza Garibaldi .
economy
The region is strongly influenced by agriculture, mainly cereals , olives , grapes and various types of vegetables are grown.
Town twinning
It has been twinned with the municipality of Ronda in Spain since 1996 and with La Charité-sur-Loire in France since 2004 .
