Montecchio Vesponi is a village and hamlet of the municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino , Province of Arezzo .

geography

The village, with about 766 inhabitants, is located 4 km south of Castiglion Fiorentino, on a hill at the lower edge of the Chio valley, 363 m above sea level.

history

The first settlement on Montecchio hill dates from the Etruscan-Roman era. The castle was built in the 9th century. In the 11th century the castle was known as Castrum Montis Giusponi , a derivative of the Guasconi family name from Arezzo . In 1347 the place was under the rule of Perugia . After the Battle of Campaldino, the town became the property of Florence. Florence passed the place on to John Hawkwood (Giovanni Acuto) around 1383 . After his death, Montecchio fell back to Florence. The place was independent until 1774, then it was incorporated into Castiglion Fiorentino through the territorial reform of Grand Duke Leopold I.
