Fabrizio Meoni (* 31 December 1957 in Castiglione Fiorentino , Province of Arezzo , † 11. January 2005 in Atar , Mauritania ) was an Italian Rally Raid - motorcycle racer .

biography

Meoni did not begin with desert rallies until 1989, initially as an amateur, and won the Pharaohs rally in Egypt for the first time in 1996 . He died at the age of 48 as a result of an accident on the 11th stage of the 2005 Dakar Rally . In a fall, he hit the handlebars with his head, which penetrated the goggles. All attempts at resuscitation on site were unsuccessful. Rumors of a heart attack were denied by the race management. Meoni was the 45th fatality in the history of the rally and the second in the 27th edition, just one day after the Spaniard José Manuel Pérez . Meoni was second overall and won the rally in 2001 and 2002.

Meoni left a wife and two children. At the start in Barcelona he announced that this would be his 13th and final participation in the desert rally. Meoni drove as a professional for the KTM team .

With Meoni, the third top motorcyclist in the rally raid scene died within a very short time. In honor of Meoni, Pérez 'and Richard Saincts (last year's Dakar winner who had a fatal accident in the Pharaohs rally), the motorcyclists of the Dakar rally canceled the 13th stage from Kiffa to Bamako , but then restarted the race. Cyril Despres and his teammates put up a plaque at the scene of the accident.

In 2017, a bronze statue was unveiled in his home town of Castiglion Fiorentino. She stands in a roundabout of the SR 71 and shows him on his rally motorcycle.
