Kiffa ( Arabic كيفة, DMG Kīfa ) is the provincial capital of the Assaba region in southern Mauritania .
The desert town on the northern edge of the Sahel zone has an airfield ( IATA code: KFA) with a 1600 meter runway.
The mosque and the market with handicrafts are interesting for tourists, especially the multicolored glass beads made of glass powder (Kiffa beads) . The color samples are applied as a mixture of glass powder and gum arabic and burned in over the fire.
