Matthias Walkner (born September 1, 1986 in Kuchl , Salzburg ) is an Austrian motocross driver.

The Salzburg resident began training in a motorcycle specialist shop in 2002, which he completed in 2006. He has been a test driver for Red Bull KTM since 2004 . After completing a few training sessions with Ferdinand Hirscher , Walkner won the Motocross World Championship in the MX3 class in 2012 . On the advice of Heinz Kinigadner , Walkner drove his first rally in Greece in 2014, in which he was victorious.

At the 2015 Dakar Rally he won the third stage ahead of the Spaniard Marc Coma , and on the seventh stage he finished third. At the 2016 Dakar Rally , he retired on stage seven, in third place in the overall standings, after a fall with a broken thigh. In 2017 , he finished second overall in the motorcycle classification and thus achieved his first podium at the Dakar Rally . Another year later, at the 2018 Dakar Rally , he was the first Austrian to win the motorcycle championship and the second Austrian to win a Dakar Rally category after Peter Reif , who won the 1997 truck category.

His older sister Eva Walkner is a successful freeride skier.
