The route sometimes took the cars up to 3,900 meters above sea level, which caused symptoms of altitude sickness in some drivers . For example, front runner Nasser Al-Attiyah had to take several breaks due to severe nausea and only finished seventh.

Joan Barreda Bort, the leader in the motorcycle classification, fell on this stage, breaking his handlebar. He reached the finish in tenth place and retained the overall lead. Since support from mechanics and service teams was prohibited during the marathon stage, the damage could only be repaired in a makeshift manner. In order to remain competitive he swapped his steering arm with that of the Argentinean Honda driver Demian Guiral .

Overall rating

motorcycles

In the end, Marc Coma won the favorites for motorcycles. For a long time, the Honda driver Joan Barreda Bort turned out to be the fastest driver, until the electronics of his Honda went on strike while driving through the Salar de Uyuni salt desert .

The Honda proved to be very fast and so the Japanese manufacturer won seven stages. However, all four top drivers Joan Barreda Bort, Paulo Gonçalves (racing driver) | Paulo Gonçalves, Hélder Rodrigues and Jeremias Israel Esquerre had more or less serious technical problems that set Barreda and Gonçalves back in their battle for overall victory. The Spaniard Laia Sanz caused a stir, with 9th place, the best result for a woman in the motorcycle class in Dakar history. She was also the second best Honda.

Thus, KTM took its 14th overall victory in a row. Seven KTMs were among the top 10 in the overall standings. With Marc Coma, an experienced driver achieved his fifth overall victory, but Matthias Walkner and Toby Price, two debutants each with a stage win, even finished third in the overall standings. The fourth-placed driver was also a relatively inexperienced driver with Pablo Quintanilla.

The performance of Yamaha was disappointing, not being able to achieve a single stage win and, with Olivier Pain in 10th place, not being able to compete with KTM and Honda.

Quads

With Rafal Sonik, one of the three favorites prevailed in the quads. His greatest opponents Ignacio Casale and Sergio Lafuente both retired shortly before the end, which meant that Sonik secured the victory safely. Third-placed Walter Nosiglia was the first Bolivian to take the podium at the Dakar Rally. Only 18 of 45 quads started made it to the finish in Buenos Aires.

cars

When it came to cars, the mini team was unbeatable in 2015. With Nasser Al-Attiyah, however, a customer driver who was not part of the vehicle manufacturer's team, X-Raid, prevailed. Krzysztof Hołowczyc was the third best placed in Sven Quandt's team . Nani Roma and Orlando Terranova had no chance of making it onto the podium with technical problems and driving errors that were not their fault. Four Mini were among the top five, five among the top ten. You achieved eleven of thirteen possible stage wins.

The Toyota Hilux, which were used by various teams, turned out to be the greatest competition. Giniel de Villiers achieved second place with his East Holstein navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz. Yazeed Al-Rajhi convinced as a debutant with a stage win; he retired in third place due to a technical defect through no fault of his own.

Peugeot was unable to meet the high expectations in its comeback year. All three vehicles had technical problems, and none of the drivers were flawless. Stéphane Peterhansel achieved the best overall result with 11th place.

Robby Gordon achieved 19th place overall with his self-built Gordini and was able to win the last stage. However, many technical difficulties as well as some navigation errors prevented a better performance.

With Carlos Sousa in the Mitsubishi and Ronan Chabot in the SMG buggy, two other makes achieved a top 10 place.

Trucks

In 2015, the KAMAZ couldn't be beaten. Airat Mardejew won the overall ranking and his first Dakar after a close team-internal fight. After his teammates Andrei Karginow and Eduard Nikolajew, the third works driver was able to celebrate his overall victory. Especially in open desert terrain, the Russian trucks with Liebherr engines were superior, and the Iveco, which were also sometimes fast, could not keep up in terms of reliability.

Gerard de Rooy's team was able to position Hans Stacey in 6th place, de Rooy himself was only ninth.

The best non-KAMAZ was Aleš Loprais in the MAN in 4th place.

With Tatra and MAZ, two other brands were able to place in the top 10.
