The second ( Patrick Zaniroli ) and fourth ( Jean Ragnotti ) places are also occupied by polecats. Roland Gumpert , the future race director at Audi Sport , who played a key role in the further development of the VW Iltis, achieved ninth place among the cars with the Iltis service vehicle.
Miloud Ataouat won the truck rating on Sonacome . Two other vehicles of this Algerian brand (today SNVI , emerged from a former Berliet factory ) of the type M210 6x6, equipped with V8 engines from Deutz , also took third and fourth place in their category, but this was the only participation from Sonacome at the Dakar Rally.
The fastest woman was Christine Beckers , who took seventh place in the car classification in a Range Rover V8.
Incidents
After the fourth stage, Hubert Auriol , who had already won three special tests and taken the lead among the motorcycles, was disqualified because he had his motorcycle transported by a local truck after a gearbox failure.
