Dakar Rally 1981

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1981 Dakar Rally was the third edition of the Dakar Rally . It began on January 1, 1981 in Paris and ended on January 20, 1981 in Dakar .

The route led over 6263 kilometers through France , Algeria , Mali , Upper Volta , Ivory Coast and Senegal .

Attendees

Of the 291 vehicles that started (170 cars, 106 motorcycles and 15 trucks), 91 reached the finish in Dakar within the evaluation time (60 cars, 28 motorcycles and 3 trucks).

The multiple Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx and his co-driver, the actor Claude Brasseur, were there for the first time . However, a rollover with her Citroën CX on the last stage led to her retirement.

Thierry de Montcorgé started in a Rolls-Royce sponsored by Christian Dior called Jules (named after the men's collection that was current at the time), which had been massively converted for the rally. He didn't make it to Dakar either.

The oldest participant was Georges Houel (1913–2008), then 67 , who competed in a Renault 30 . Houel was a successful track and field athlete and rugby player from the 1930s, and from 1946 drove motorcycle races . From 1954 he devoted himself to rallying , where he was also able to celebrate successes. As with his first participation in 1979 , however, he retired prematurely from the Dakar Rally this time.

The first winner in both the motorcycles and the overall classification was Hubert Auriol , who this time raced a BMW GS 800 . In the cars, René Metge won in a Range Rover V8 and in the trucks it was Adrien Villette who was the first to cross the finish line with an ALM-ACMAT .

The fastest woman was Christine Martin , who achieved 10th place in the motorcycle ranking with her Honda 250 XLS . Until her serious fall on the last stage, she was even in 6th place.

Incidents

The winner of the two previous years, Cyril Neveu , broke the chain after just 30 meters, which cost him 25 minutes. An engine failure at an early stage in Africa ultimately meant that he only finished 25th in the motorcycle rankings that year.

There was a fatal accident near In Salah on January 6th when three Italians (Giuseppe De Tommaso, 25, journalist for Motosprint magazine, the mechanic Franco Druetta, 36, and Andrea Carisi, 30, both from Iveco -Team) got off the road with their Fiat Campagnola and rolled over several times. The three were found dead by a German tourist around half an hour after the accident.
