history
The place used to be an important station on the trans-Saharan caravan route and, as the last larger settlement before the central Saharan city of Tamanrasset, has not lost any of its former importance for the movement of people and goods. Pierer's Lexicon describes In Salah 1857 as “a town in a sandy area with many springs in the Tuat oasis (western Sahara), stone houses, mostly inhabited by marabouts; Date palms, cereals; 3000 inhabitants ".
There are flight connections to Algiers and other major cities in the country. In Salah is home to one of the largest Algerian facilities for oil production and the production of natural gas , where the new technology of CO₂ separation and storage is also being tested. The city is considered to be one of the hottest places in the Sahara. Allegedly 53 ° C were already measured in the shade.
