Life

family

Brasseur came from a traditional French family of actors. His father Pierre and his mother Odette Joyeux were also recognized actors in their day. Brasseur was born Claude Espinasse and later took the stage name Brasseur. The name goes back to his great-grandfather, the actor Jules Brasseur (1829-1890), who was originally called Jules Dumont and who first took the name Brasseur in 1847 on the occasion of a play. Since then, all members of the family have adopted the name. Brasseur was married twice, first with Peggy Roche from 1961. After the divorce he married Michèle Cambon. The second marriage comes from the son Alexandre Brasseur (* 1971), who also works as an actor. Brasseur died in December 2020 at the age of 84 and will be buried next to his father in the Père-Lachaise cemetery.

His parents gave him an early insight into the art of film and met numerous actors in the early years of his life. After his parents divorced in 1945, he spent most of his youth with his grandmother. This encouraged his interest in film. However, as an undisciplined student, he was eventually sent to boarding school. In addition to his first experiences in the theater , he attended the Paris Conservatory , where he met Jean-Paul Belmondo, among others . At first Brasseur wanted to become a journalist, but quickly turned back to the art of acting. During a day of shooting in a barracks his interest in military service was aroused and he joined the French army. During the Algerian War, he served in Algiers and Oran from 1956 to 1959 . For his achievements he received a medal of merit.

He made his first appearance as an unspecified man in 1956 in the film Rencontre à Paris . In the same year he played in the Christmas comedy Fortunately, there is a first major role. His final breakthrough came in 1964 when he took on the role of Arthur in Jean-Luc Godard's film The Outsiders Gang . Another high point of his career was his portrayal of Daniel, gripped by a midlife crisis, in An Elephant Is Big Mistakes from 1976.

In 1980 Brasseur received the César for Best Actor for his role as Commissioner Jacques Fush in the film The Police War . Over the next several months, numerous police officer roles were proposed to him, all of which he declined. In the 1980s and 1990s, Brasseur turned back to the theater.

He was best known in Germany in the role of François Beretton in the films La Boum and La Boum 2 . In both films he played the father of the young Vic ( Sophie Marceau ) at the side of Brigitte Fossey . Five years after La Boum , Brasseur played the alcoholic Alan Kolber in Descent to Hell in 1986 , this time as Marceau's husband. The fact that, after the father role in La Boum, he was now the partner of the then 19-year-old actress caused a scandal in France due to the revealing erotic scenes between the two .

From 2003 to 2007 he played the police officer Franck Keller in the television series of the same name , which was broadcast in France by TF1 . In 2005, Brasseur took on the role of dictator Benito Mussolini in the French television production Edda .

Others

In addition to acting, Brasseur was particularly interested in motorsport . From 1981 to 1986 he regularly took part in the Paris – Dakar rally as co-driver; Together with the former Formula 1 driver Jacky Ickx , he won the 1983 race in a Mercedes-Benz G-Class .

The English singer and songwriter Morrissey mentions Brasseur in the song At Last I Am Born from the album Ringleader of the Tormentors in the following line: "Look at me now ... from difficult child to spectral hand to Claude Brasseur ...". Morrissey and Brasseur valued each other and met in 2006 at Brasseur's request on the French television channel Canal + .
