action

Jessica, who grew up in the small town of Mâcon , visits her grandmother Madame Roux in the retirement home. She tells the granddaughter how she started working in Paris . Since she could not afford a life in luxury, she worked in luxury - as a hotel girl in a posh hotel. Jessica is now also looking for work in Paris. After numerous rejections, she was given a rehearsal position in a café not far from the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées , where theatrical and musical performances take place. Actually only men work in the café. However, as a concert by the well-known pianist Jean-François Lefort and the premiere of a Feydeau play with the well-known television actress Catherine Versen will take place in parallel over the next few days and two waiters will be absent due to illness, Jessica has a chance. A third event is planned for the day of the two premieres in a museum adjacent to the theater: the old art collector Jacques Grumberg wants to sell his high-quality collection of paintings. In addition to numerous pictures, Brancusi's work The Kiss is also for sale.

Jessica comes into contact with those involved through her work. You all have doubts. Jean-François Lefort finds himself in a crisis of meaning. He realized that other people can just quit their job and start something else. He is a pianist himself and will never be able to be anything other than a pianist. His dream, however, would be to break out of the constraints of his job and play for the poor, the sick or completely uninterested in music. When he confesses this to his wife Valentine, who has not only been by his side for 13 years and has followed every one of his concerts, but is also his manager, the marriage threatens to break up. Valentine is unwilling to move into a lonely house with him by a lake. On the evening of the concert, Lefort suddenly stops playing. The clothes with bow ties and tails that are usual at concerts are too warm for him and so he strips down to a T-shirt before he finishes the piece. The applause is still great. In the end, Lefort and his wife get back together, especially since Lefort could make friends with the idea of a house by the sea.

Catherine Versen is desperate about her job. During the day she rehearses the easy Feydeau piece, into which she interprets profound aspects to the chagrin of the director. In the evenings she shoots new episodes of a series with her as a judge, which is currently on television and regularly moves viewers to tears. She herself is critical of her fame. She wants to be recognized as an artist, but receives only praise from fans for her role in a series and at times can hardly stand the public's attention. Her goal is to work with the renowned director Brian Sobinsky, who is currently in Paris to cast actors for a new film about Simone de Beauvoir . Although she approaches him aggressively, he ignores her at first, but is taken with her when he sees her on TV. She in turn explains to him how he should actually see Simone de Beauvoir and he is impressed by her interpretation. Her performance in the Feydeau Comedy was a great success with the public and after the premiere Sobinsky was waiting in Catherine's dressing room. He asks her to work with him on the new script for the Beauvoir film, and Catherine passes out from enthusiasm.

Years later, Jacques Grumberg's decision to sell his collection brought him back into contact with his son Frédéric. Jacques' wife has died and he has found a new friend in young Valérie. Frédéric is against the relationship, but Jacques doesn't know the real reason for it: Frédéric was once with Valérie himself. Frédéric later married, but was recently abandoned by his wife. The auction of the art collection touches Frédéric personally: Brancusi's The Kiss was his late mother's favorite work. Frédéric, on the other hand, does not know that his father wants to give the collection to new, dignified hands, especially during his lifetime. He has cancer and is being treated. In the course of the preparation for the auction, Jacques and his son approach each other. Frédéric, on the other hand, takes a liking to Jessica, who he runs into over and over again by chance. Both become a couple. At the auction, Frédéric begins, unnoticed by his father, to also bid on the sculpture The Kiss , which has risen to a value of several million euros within a very short time. Ashamed, Jacques withdraws the item from the auction to hand it over to Frédéric. Jessica has meanwhile brought her grandmother to Paris. Her money is enough to pay her grandmother a night in a luxury hotel where she used to only work. Madame Roux is happy even if Jessica doesn't stay with her. She is drawn back to her café, but this time as a guest: she meets with Frédéric, who has been waiting for her there with the wrapped Brancusi.
