A Wedding and Other Obstacles is a 2013 French comedy film directed by Danièle Thompson .

action

The young Noga learns the cello at the Royal College of Music in London , her parents, the strictly Jewish violinist Zef and his wife Irène, live in New York City and are often on tour as musicians. Because Zef finds it difficult to get along with his brother Roni, who lives in Paris and who has made his fortune with diamonds and does not live his faith, he can pretend to work so that he does not have to travel to Europe for the wedding of Roni's daughter Melita. Noga prepares to represent her family alone at her cousin's wedding, whom she loves very much. Everything turns out differently: When she gets him a pastrami sandwich, Irène is run over by a car and dies. The funeral in the Montparnasse cemetery will take place on the day before Melita's wedding and Zef is now inevitably present at the wedding. During the train ride to Paris, Noga, in tears, meets a young man who comforts her, helps him write a love letter, and whom she kisses at the end. Their ways separate at the train station.

Irène's funeral cannot take place because the American coffin is too big for the Parisian coffin pit. Because the Shabbat begins, the funeral is postponed to the next Monday, a few days after the wedding. The wedding takes place, but Zef and Noga stay away from it. In the meantime, both mourn at Irène's coffin, which was laid out in Roni's house. It is only by chance that Noga realizes that Melita's husband Sam is the stranger from the train. Since she has already told Melita about the acquaintance and the kiss, she keeps her discovery to herself and avoids Sam.

A year later, Roni, his wife Giovanna and Melita are anchored with their yacht in Saint-Tropez , where they are waiting for Sam. He has had enough of jet set life and pretends to be in Berlin even though he has already arrived in the city. On his foray through the streets he suddenly sees Noga again, who is giving a concert with her father and the young musician Daniel. She pretends in vain not to recognize him; Both later walk through town, kiss and spend the night together on the beach. Noga tries several times to tell Sam the truth, but does not get around to it. The next morning they finally meet in the hotel and Melita introduces them to each other. Sam is shocked when Noga gives him up: Melita tells her that she is expecting a child from Sam.

In autumn Noga accepted an engagement with the Philharmonic in Salzburg and got engaged to Daniel. Zef, in turn, meets the sophrologist Clarisse Dorval at the bedside of his father Aron, who looks very much like Irène and fascinates him. In April of the following year, all family members meet in Maxim’s restaurant on the occasion of the birthday of the aged head of the family Aron . The two repeatedly arguing brothers Zef and Roni are reconciled, while Melita and Sam have already quarreled before going to the restaurant so that only Melita goes to the party. Noga is torn as Zef is determined to announce her impending marriage to Daniel, but actually his intention to marry Clarisse is unexpected by everyone. Noga meets Sam while gasping in front of Maxim’s ; after a discussion they both kiss. In view of his declaration of love to Clarisse, Giovanna chokes so bad that an ambulance is called. When the party appears in front of Maxim’s , everyone present sees Noga and Sam kissing. While Daniel leaves indignantly, Melita realizes what was going on with Sam and Noga all this time and forgives Noga.

A few months later, Zef, Roni and Aron are pushing three strollers: Melita and Sam's child, Noga and Sam's child, and Zef and Clarisse's child.

criticism

The film was panned by the French press. Télérama found the film to be as heavy and ostentatious as a 15-meter yacht. For Le Parisien , the film was “sans passion”; Viewers who had seen the director's previous films would be disappointed with this film (“déçu et attristé”), Le Parisien found , that it lacked originality and real humor.

For Eric Libiot from L'Express it was already the worst film of the year in April 2013 (“le plus mauvais film de l'année”), so you have to “get up very early to make it worse”. Danièle Thompson publicly described Libiot's review as "a pile of vomit" that splattered the entire film crew.
