Catherine Leterrier
Catherine Leterrier (born Simone Fabius ), (born October 26, 1942 in Aix-les-Bains , Savoy ) is a French costume designer and former fashion designer. Since the beginning of the 1970s she has furnished more than 60 film and television productions with costumes.
Life
Catherine Leterrier comes from the famous Parisian antique dealer family Fabius. She is married to the director François Leterrier , mother of director Louis Leterrier , daughter of André Fabius , sister of Laurent Fabius and François Fabius , and aunt of Thomas Fabius . Catherine Leterrier studied art history at Columbia University in New York and then returned to Paris. There she started working for the French fashion magazine Marie Claire . She later studied fashion design at the renowned Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris. Her fellow students included Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld . She then worked for some time as a fashion designer for brands such as Rodier and Lacoste .
After marrying the French film director François Leterrier, she took on his family name. From the beginning of the 1970s she began to furnish her husband's film productions as a costume designer. Having become financially independent through her work in the textile business, she also helped filmmakers friends like Andrzej Żuławski ( Night Screen ) or Jean-Paul Rappeneau ( The Beautiful Wilds ) and found pleasure in the new job. In the following decades she designed the costumes for domestic film productions by, among others, Philippe de Broca , Claude Lelouch , Louis Malle , Jean-Marie Poiré , Alain Resnais , Jacques Rouffio and Danièle Thompson . For her work on Resnais' historical drama Mélo (1986) she received her first nomination for the César . Leterrier was awarded France's national film prize for the first time in 2000 for Luc Besson's historical film Johanna von Orleans . Sporadically she took on commissions for international film productions, including Michael Apted's multiple Oscar-nominated biopic Gorillas im Nebel (1988) as well as Robert Altman's fashion satire Prêt-à-Porter (1994) and Ridley Scott 's romantic comedy A Good Year (2006).
Leterrier, who appreciates the fashion of Rei Kawakubo , sees greater intellectual challenge in costume creation. "When they make period films, you have to recreate time, they have to go backwards, you have to imagine what the character is thinking, do what the director wants, but fashion design has to do with shopping," says Leterrier. When she reproduces a period of time, she is inspired by painters of the corresponding epoch, as they would have already drained their time with a new approach and artistic approach.
The high point in Leterrier's career so far came with Anne Fontaine's feature film Coco Chanel - The Beginning of a Passion (2008). For the biopic, in which Audrey Tautou took on the title role of French fashion designer , the French costume designer portrayed both early 19th century fashion with corsets and large hats, as well as the revolutionary, easy-to-wear style of Coco Chanel. At work, Leterrier was inspired by museum visits, pictures and photographs. She re-created Chanel's suit, her silk pajamas and sailing shirts worn at horse races and was helped by Karl Lagerfeld and the fashion house Chanel, who provided originals for the filming. The reward was Leterrier's third César in 2010, as well as nominations for an Oscar and the British BAFTA Award for best costume designer.
Their marriage to François Leterrier resulted in their son Louis Leterrier (* 1973), who is also a film director. In addition to working in the cinema, Catherine Leterrier also equipped theatrical productions and operas. She worked several times with the opera and theater director Frédéric Bélier-Garcia (including La Ronde , Don Giovanni and La Cruche cassée ) and Pierre Mondy ( Même heure l'année prochaine ). For her costumes in Bernard Murat's production of Georges Feydeau's La Dame de chez Maxim at the Théâtre Marigny in Paris , Leterrier received a 1991 nomination for the French Molière Theater Prize . With the exception of a few jobs for the French children's brand Bonpoint, she has largely given up her work as a freelance fashion designer .
