At the beginning of the 1960s, however, he switched behind the camera at an early stage and directed the drama Hunger nach Liebe with Simone Signoret in the female lead, his first own feature film, for which he also wrote the screenplay. In 1963 he was awarded the Grand prix du cinéma français for the first time for his film A King Alone . In the early 1970s, he won this honor a second time with his cinema production Private-Screening with Françoise Fabian , Jean-Luc Bideau and Jane Birkin . In 1977 he shot with the actress Sylvia Kristel in Goodbye Emmanuelle part of the Emmanuelle series, which was commercially very successful in France. In the mid-1980s, the two comedies The Bodyguard followed with Jane Birkin, Gérard Jugnot and Sami Frey and Milestones of Life in the cast Laura Antonelli , Michel Boujenah and Jean-Pierre Cassel .

In 1987 he directed the TV miniseries Insel der Meuterer based on the novel Die Insel by Robert Merle . François Leterrier turned to French television as early as 1965 with the television film La guêpe, and since the late 1970s has increasingly devoted his time to the medium as a director with television films and episodes of television series. With his directorial work on the television film Les disparus de Reillanne , he ended his career as a filmmaker in 1993.

Their marriage to the costume designer Catherine Leterrier resulted in their son Louis Leterrier , who followed in his father's footsteps and also became a director.
