Michel Boujenah (born November 3, 1952 in Tunis , French Tunisia) is a French film actor and director .

Life

Boujenah was born in Tunis as one of four sons to a Jewish family. His brother Paul Boujenah later became a filmmaker. The family moved to France in 1963. Boujenah grew up in Bagneux, not far from Paris. He began to play theater as a teenager and after finishing school wanted to become a theater actor. When he was rejected because of his accent at the École supérieure d'art dramatique des Théâtre national de Strasbourg , he founded the theater group La grande cuillère with Paul Allio and Corinne Atlas in the early 1970s and performed in schools and smaller towns. He also wrote autobiographically inspired plays about the life of Tunisian Jews, such as the one-man show Albert (1980) and Les magnifiques (1984), which became popular with audiences. In 2004 the sequel to Les magnifiques followed under the title Les nouveaux magnifiques . Boujenah has been artistic director of the Festival de Ramauelle since 2007; he succeeded the late Jean-Claude Brialy .

Boujenah came to film in 1980 and played a supporting role in Jan Saint-Hamont's comedy Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai fait au Bon Dieu pour avoir une femme qui boit dans les cafés avec les hommes? His breakthrough came in 1984 with the Oscar- nominated comedy Three Men and a Baby by Coline Serreau . In 1985 he was awarded a César for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Michel - one of the three eponymous men . In the 2003 sequel 18 years later , Boujenah was seen again as Michel. After Three Men and a Baby , leading roles followed in Freddy the Clueless (1986), Who Stole the Rabbi's Coke? (1987) and The Joker and the Jackpot (1991). For the portrayal of Bajou in the French-Tunisian co-production Le nombril du monde , Boujenah received a César nomination for Best Actor in 1994 .

In 2003 Boujenah made his directorial debut with Père et fils and was nominated for a César in the category Best First Work the following year . With over a million viewers, the comedy became an audience success. With cachez-moi! a short film in black and white followed in 2004, before Boujenah made the comedy 3 amies in 2007 ; Mathilde Seigner , Pascal Elbé and Kad Merad could be seen in the leading roles .

Boujenah is married to Isabelle Luzet , a film hairstylist. The couple have two children.
